It is likely they would the need to modify the trains?

I can't imagine there will be many week longer closures coming up having had two recently.

Note from GWR did not detail how, but my guess is it will be checking the platform clearances rather than modifying the trains. There are better qualified people here who may know.

No, you modify the infrastructure if they are any minor issues. if they are major then the DfT will probably not authorise any NR/GWR spend.

The “ride height modification” lifted the entire body by a few cm. The exact figure will be in an old thread somewhere. I can’t think why it would make any platform clearances worse.

Do they need to do new measurements of trains or is this simply a form needs to filled out and someone forgot or wasn't told it needed to filled out?

Like going on holiday aboard. If you don't provide document details you cannot travel. Doesn't mean you don't have the details or anything needs to change. Just you need to fill out a form in time.

Indeed - so much of the problems of today's railway seems to be paper-based rather than anything else!

What you do is take the kinematic envelope measurements of the train and match it with the latest version of the infrastructure model. It is a computerised process that gives you an all clear or exceedances, down to the last mm. Then you deal with the exceedances, one by one. GWR are quite used to this.

Sometimes they are quite minor, like a speed sign being too close to the vehicle, or an under platform step needing a few mm shaved off, or a bonkers reading at a bridge, which is nearly always vegetation and easily dealt with. Sometimes you need to do a minor track slew, often where it has got out of adjustment with a platform.

Once you are all clear or can operate with restrictions, your class Statement of Compatibility can be updated and you are good to go. Eventually someone may update the SA but the SOC is now the important document to get right.

Thanks for that. Very interesting, especially for someone who knows nothing about it. I like reading about this stuff.

Used to be so simple years ago majority of vehicles built to C6 was a passport to nearly the entire network

On a related note. On Sunday 10 March there was engineering works meaning it was rail replacement buses between Guildford and Gatwick Airport. A stopping service was running hourly and a fast non-stop service every 2 hours.

I don't remember reading any ticket acceptance with South Western Railway via Clapham Junction. Was there any ticket acceptance?

I only wondered this because during the 10 day engineering works there was.
