I worked for the PTE at Byker from '82 to '94 and even had an interest before then as my dad worked at Slatyford from the 70's - '86.

Still have a fond affinity for old PTE operations and the Northern General/United Automobile ones too from the 70's and 80's.

I still remember Worswick Street on a Sunday afternoon heading out on a jolly on the 723 VR to Darlo, a Saturday morning RE(LH?) on an X1 to Boro or a Sunday morning 685 (some kind of Bristol thing :))to Carlisle and train back.

The 723 does not run anymore, in fact, there is no service direct from Newcastle to Darlington.

The X1 still runs, however is split up into a X1 and X2, using service number X2 between Newcastle and Durham, then X1 from Durham to Middlesbrough using a mix of Geminis, Pulsars and Prestiges and seen here http://www.flickr.com/photos/spd17/8481992154/in/photostream and here http://www.flickr.com/photos/spd17/8480883049/in/photostream/
