You can now swap your train from as little as £2.50

That's the headline with this new service from Northern that lets you change the time of your train with an Advance ticket (but not any other aspects of the ticket, eg date, destination. You get a barcode emailed to you to show to the train staff on board.

Sounds like a big step forward at first sight, but it's not obvious what the costs of the change are, compared with purchasing a new ticket.

Wonder whether the cost of the original advance ticket plus the minimum £2.50 extra is still cheaper than a flexible walk up Anytime ticket?
