Northern Unit Refurbishments

First refreshed 170 leaving crewe later today
Did this one make it out? And are the others going to be refurbished and/or re-liveried before entering service?

On a more general note, have Northern internally refurbished anything lately (apart from the above 170)? The last one I remember being reported was a 319 last month.

Thanks in advance for any replies

Regarding 150s a few pages back, Central Trains use to have hybrid 150/1 and /2s and the crew door of the /2 was converted into a single passenger door with standard open/close button, any reasons why they wouldn't be able to do this again??

A 170 went around the Harrogate loop today with no issues found.
I think the 170's are a bit high geared for most of Northern s slow network. I believe they don't change from hydraulic to direct drive till around 65mph. The harrogate line overall max speed is just 65 and indeed not many of Northerns lines in WY are much faster. Running in hydraulic uses much more fuel.

Current plan is that only this first one will be refurbed prior to the TT change, work starts on the rest from August.

I think the return of this one in full Northern livery represents the first proper step change in quality across the Northern network. These along with the new ones will help to improve the quality of services on the busier parts of the network to make these more of a commercial success.

I agree, it's shameful that a posh bus service is able to give the railway a genuine run for its money between Leeds and Harrogate - these units should help grow the rail market here and elsewhere.

Be fascinated to see the interior of these units after Northern treatment, as they were already pretty decent at Scotrail.

Well excluding the hire in's this Northern's newest and best DMU at the moment, interesting that they have chosen to take the blue beyond the 1st set of doors, which they haven't done with the 195's.

You still have to wonder why they don't put these on Northern Connect rather than 158's. Talking of which has any 158 actually materialised with the supposed new seating?

One would hope so.

I am genuinely excited to see them in service. I live in Scotland but travel to the North of England fairly often.

I think you’ll find the first set of doors on a 195 are a lot further back than a 170 and guess that there wouldn’t be room for the cheap looking balls if they had a smaller area of blue on the Turbostar?!

Possibly so although I think It looks a little odd with the contrasting doors in a different colour, XC have a similar style livery but don't take it beyond the 1st door which I think looks better.

Yeah probably would look more consistent, but I think the Northern livery looks pretty naff anyway so it doesn’t make that much difference!

It’s almost a shame they didn’t keep it in ScotRail livery minus the Saltire white dots! The pale blue dots would have matched Northern’s new seat moquette!

There was a picture of one part done with a few new "ironing board" seats on The North Rail Scene group on Facebook.

Does anyone know what future stock will be coming to Heaton depot once the Pacers go? There seems to be very little activity up here at the moment other than the Sprinters receiving PRM mods.

It'll be a mix of class 156 (as at present) and 158 units, the latter primarily for the "Northern Connect" Middlesbrough - Newcastle - Carlisle services.
What a beauty she is!

Here seen ready to leave Crewe for Neville Hill earlier
The livery is still crap and will look worse still once its received it's final coat of prerequisite "Northern grime" after a period of time in service, but I must admit that it does seem better suited to more modern outline stock, and it's interesting to see a Turbostar finally in the employ of Northern (A post-privatisation DMU all of their own, and only twenty years after the initial introduction of the type ;)).

Thanks for the update, it's a really useful guide as to the current state of the Northern fleet. 150130 was in service yesterday (in FGW livery) so not sure if this is a recent addition to traffic

Not sure if it has already been mentioned but I've just seen 319377 in full livery and with the new seat covers fitted
