There are no local services in the Newcastle area on New Years day. This is normal, it’s not a Northumberland line specific issue.
Throwback to the days when Newcastle got the best of both worlds, England's official Christmas Bank Holidays and most places unofficially Scotland’s New Year, Hogmanay, too. (Banks in Northumberland offered a very limited token service until 12.00.)

My plan is something like:
Leave Nottingham around 0830
Arrive Ashington around 1230
A pint in the Spoons
A trot to Newbiggin via the old railway
2 or 3 pints in the real ale pubs of Newbiggin (CAMRA says there are a few)
Trot back to Ashington
A pint at Hop 77 (opens at 1600)
Train to Newcastle at 1700
A pint in Newcastle at The Centurion
Back to Nottingham by about 2130

Probably not for a couple of months though...
Weather permitted I'm hoping to do this in the next week or so on a 4 in 8 NorthEast Rover (any confirmation yet if Rovers are valid on the Ashington branch?).

Looking at the OS map it would appear that the old railway path only extends for the last mile or so into Newbiggin and the section West of that is a dull road walk alongside the A197. Has anyone found a more interesting walking route between Ashington and Newbiggin?

I wouldn't follow the A197 to get to the path, I'd say starting from the station following Woodhorn road is a little shorter and should be less unpleasant than the 'A' road. Then the path starts pretty much at the roundabout where Woodhorn Road meets the A197, 1.5 miles to Newbiggin sea front. The first part of the path is next to the existing freight line before that branches off and you're left on the old railway path.

I can't see any better alternatives of roughly the same length.

I would suggest walking along the A197 as it’s a bit greener, and doesn’t mean you have to cross the busy A197 near Wansbeck Hospital.

Follow Station Road down to the crossroads, cross over at Superdrug, turn left towards Asda, follow the path down to the petrol station, cross over at McDonalds and follow the A197 from there.

This is a simple straightforward route indeed, the path next to the A197 is segregated from the road and is a joint cycle path (you can see this on streetview of course), so it's not unpleasant to walk along, but it is boring - I used exactly this route last week to get to Woodhorn museum, by crossing the pedestrian level crossing over the railway and into the country park and from there along the easy path to the museum.

However, I returned from the museum by the same route through the country park and over same level crossing and then took the public right of way through the allotments opposite (directly over the road from the level crossing) and turned into Woodhorn Road to walk into town. In my view walking along this residential street is more pleasant and interesting that walking alongside the A197

To get to Newbiggin it looks like you can continue east on Woodhorn Road (ie not cross towards the level crossing and then into the country park at that point), then cross the small roundabout and walk towards the Aged Miners Homes after which it becomes a right of way - and looks to be tarmacced as it is also a cycle path- beside the existing freight line and then onto the disused line to Newbiggin.

I would think that would be the most interesting way to Newbiggin (streetview enables a visual comparison for some of this).

I assume no reason why a North East Rover would not be valid on the new line.

As an aside I would say the Woodhorn Colliery museum is superb, and well worth a visit. We had a good lunch in the cafe there too.

Also a good independent roll and pie shop (Hog Roast Deli) next door to Greggs on the main street through the town, which I'd recommend. Sadly the micro pub Hop 77, near the station, was closed on the day of our visit, a monday, which was the only disappointment of our visit as it looked well worth visiting (note - info on web said it would be open but handwritten opening hours sign on door was a different story  )

I've chased this up with Northern on Twitter. At first they said check with @nationalrailenq who in turn said check with @northernassist but this morning I got what appears to be a definitive answer.

Can't really complain as with my priv pass a Newcastle - Ashington return is only 75p but at least I know now.

Personally I would speak to the guard before boarding as I don't believe that answer at all. That's someone who is relying on a map that no-one has bothered to update.

This looks like nonsense to me! Worth posting the question about the Rover validity in the tickets and fares advice part of the forum to see what the fares experts respond with.

If it were the case it would surely be a unique scenario following a line opening I would have thought...

It's quite possible it *is* actually valid. It's even quite possible you'll get someone in "authority" to agree that it is. But it's absolutely not worth it for 75p. Suppose the guard on the trip up says it's fine - but the one on the way back says it's not valid and takes a hard line? Do you want to get grief and hassle over 75p, no matter how right you are, even if you do "win" in the end?

Just buy the priv!

Obviously this is good advice. But there is a wider issue to establish if the Rover is indeed valid.

I've started a thread to see what experts think

Not a pub - but just to relate I ate at a restaurant called Il Girasole yesterday, an Italian more or less right next to Ashington station (although the other side of the tracks) and it was excellent - would recommend for anyone planning a trip out there for the line who wants to grab lunch/supper rather than just booze.

Would we need to "re-do" Benton to Shiremoor on the Metro? Are there any material differences to the route now?

Judging by the lack of facilities at Ashington station and good passenger numbers, someone with a mobile coffee van would make a few quid if they parked up.

Something similar to the one that is at Alnmouth Station.

They just need to finish demolishing (or whatever) that building that has metal fencing around it and it'll be a 30 second walk to the high street directly from platform, so I doubt it makes a huge deal of sense... tbh I don't know why the stairs up from the platform are sealed off, it doesn't "look" necessary and it would have saved us... oooh.... 2 minutes each way maybe, 90 seconds at least walking to/from the restaurant

A fair shout. Send the van to Seaton Delaval!

I think Wansbeck Sqaure is getting demolished and a community hub is being built. Hopefully as fast as possible as it isn’t the best.

On the Northumberland Line website there’s a news item about Wansbeck Square being scaffolded for demolition starting Monday 13th. Possibly why the ramped route up to the road is already closed:

Fingers crossed they actually put something in following this to allow better direct pedestrian access from the high street. The current arrangements (sending you off down an small side street) work but are hardly ideal compared to just using a ramped footbridge!

Don't believe the plans have changed but it's going to be a path leading from the main street and just one building.

You can find it here - https://publicaccess.northumberland...s.do?activeTab=documents&keyVal=SJJR2SQSLHF00

Ah that's encouraging. The lack of direct access from the high street seemed a big oversight.

Yeah, it's been needed done for years. The area which used to be underneath was just a haven for anti social behaviour (drugs etc), the last thing you need next to a train station, so it's probably a good thing it's going.

Mind not that I'd be surprised if it gets demolished and sits empty for years like the 'hole' at the other side of the street.

(The Portland Park development is locally known as the Ashington Hole for the hole reference, there's one at Bedlington aswell which is much of the same and plans only ever seem to appear around council elections with something demolished, which ironically is this year, then nothing happens for a few years).

Have the units which are normally on the service had their externally displayed destination screens adapted to incorporate 'Ashington' on their displays? (Apologies if this has already been clarified previously).

Yes Northern had onboard (internal and external) signage and announcements from day 1 sorted.

I've just spotted that there is a parmo takeaway in Ashington (imaginatively named "Parmos"!).

That's lunch sorted when I visit!
