I spent part of yesterday travelling on the aforementioned tram network, and I can say it was a few quid well spent.* The trams carry loads of passengers in the middle of the day so goodness knows what it's like during peak hours.

Mind you, the last tram I rode did worry me a bit when a 'main fan failure' was registered at Wilkinson Street (solved with a ~2 minute reboot) as I needed to catch an express to London. [* I got a taste of the Robin Hood Line too seeing as I bought a 'Kangaroo' ticket for £3.40 (all day trams, buses and trains in the City of Nottingham).]

I was pleasantly surprised with NET and the range of tickets available
for use with Tram and the various bus net works is great. Nottingham also has two of the
best bus companies in NCT and Trent. Modern Buses, good prices. I would
say Nottingham has possibly the best integrated transport network
outside of the Capital.

The prices are very good within the City Boundary and on some busy routes within the county, but Trent/Barton fares are extemely high on the more rural routes.

You are probaby right although they do offer a range of tickets for frequent travellors. Trent do invest in their routes to be fair such as Indigo etc. I can compare Nottingham favourably with say aPTE which I have a lot of knowledge, namely Merseyside.

Only reason I mention Trent fares outside the Nottingham City Boundary is because of the high fares on the Rainbow 3 and 141 routes to Hucknall and surrounding villages in comparison to the tram and Robin Hood Line.

The return fare from Nottingham to Hucknall by both tram or train is only £2.70 yet Trent charge about £3.20 for the return bus journey.
Even worse on the 141 route where to the villages of Linby and Papplewick on the north east outskirts of Hucknall Trent charge over £4 return from Nottingham.
The price of a return from Linby and Papplewick into Hucknall is approx £3 for journeys of under 2 mile which is higher than the 7 mile tram or train ride from Hucknall into Nottingham.
If the tram line is ever extended north from Hucknall to Linby, which is under consideration for the distant future, this would make Trent bus fares even more out of proportion.

Another example of how even rail travel is much higher outside the city boundary is that a return on the Robin Hood Line from Hucknall to Mansfield is £4.80 for a journey that in mileage is not that much further than Hucknall to Nottingham.

Forgetting my ramblings on about the price of Trent/Barton Fares, I also think the NET tram is great, with very good fares.
I can't wait for the system to be extended to Clifton and Chilwell. It's just a pity that it has taken so long after the first line was opened before the next two lines are built.
Line 1 was a tremenous success from the beginning and Lines 2 and 3 should have been completed by now and not be still in the planning stages.

Nottingham is actually the only city outside of London that has seen consistant increase in bus usage in recent years (at least up until the recession). Despite the fact that NCT is largely council owned, they are not subsidised and infact the council makes a profit from them. I think it says something that beyond a few Stagecoach services coming in from the North, and an Arriva joint service from Burton on Trent, Nottingham has none of the big 4 operators. Only thing I don't like about NCT is that their fleet is a little boring, all Scanias (with a few exceptions) for double and single deck, then Solos or Versa midis. Then again, at least they are not too common elsewhere (Scanias that is, not the Optares), not like Wright or Alexander Dennis. The fact that buses carry different colours depending on routes helps keep them more interesting too.

This thread is for those of you who live in Nottinghamshire and are in favour of Net Phase 2 tram extension project as a vital project to reduce pollution and improve the sustainability of the Nottingham area.

The Net phase 2 has been approved by Central Government and the City Council are keen to get moving. however there appears to be some heal dragging on the part of the County Council with regards County owned land adjacent to Cator Lane required for the tram, it appears that this has led to the City Council having to engage a tortuous process of compulsary purchase (presumably at the expense of payers of council tax /workplace parking levy) to secure the land. Nottingham City Council has already aloocated a new open space nearby to replace that which will be used for the tram.
see http://www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/net...articleid=8838

This all seems a bit ironic given the County Council are played the 'no council tax increases' card very heavily in the last local election campaign.

If you support the tram extension project and live inNottinghamshire I would very strongly urge you to write to your nottinghamshire county councillor expressing support and questioning the county councils actions over land required for the project.

find your councillor here:
http://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/ho...isyourcllr.htm

I have contacted my own councillor & he was very supportive - lobbying does work!

Please pass this onto other related contacts / networks.

Thanks, Brian Goss

It's good, don't believe the stories about all of the shootings etc like everywhere it has it's nice and posh parts and parts you should try and avoid. We have really nice buses as well :D

No Arriva at all now. Stagecoach have two routes from Mansfield (Pronto with Trent) and Worksop (Sherwood Arrow).

It's just the city centre didn't used to be one of the places to avoid in an evening (I lived in/near Nottingham for 4 years and didn't recognised the atmosphere and amount of violence around on my last few trips back - I might have been unlucky but I don't expect street fights at 8pm on two visits in a row).

The trams are good though.

Trent Barton can be pricey on single fares but they do do some quite good seasons - I used to go the slow way to manchester from time to time jumping on and off buses on the way.

when in actual fact it should be called Snottingham.

Lived there or thereabouts for 20 or so years, bit too long really as it gets boring after a while.

aside from great public transport, the best things are Rock City and the Tynemill/Castle Rock pub chain. I always go in the Strat in Bridgford when I'm back there.

A trip to Nottingham does usually tend to involve a drink or two - I recommend the Angel (but it's been a while since I visited) as one of the less obvious decent pubs. Rock City or the Rescue Rooms usually seem to feature in my visits too.

Will be interesting on my next visit as there seem to be a few bits of competition springing up for the buses especially going out West - Premiere and Yourbus. QMC to City's going to have quite a variety. Wonder if they're going to be any more successful that Nottingham Omnibus.

That does surprise me - NCT is good but run hands-off from the Council.

Although I'm no longer local so may have missed what they've been up to recently.

Up till a few years ago we had night buses 7 days a week , every 55 minutes but they stopped them due to low passenger numbers.

They used Optare Excels and Omnicity's.
Most of the Burglars in nottingham used them , everynight i would see teenage lad's in black clothing getting off and coming back 3 hours latter with bags of loot.
