Music here is usually in three categories. The most popular one is the film music where musicals are the commercial norm and each film basically acts as a mini LP of sorts with a composer, lyricist and associated session players. Then there is new emerging forms in urban centres that cater towards either hip-hop, rap or Punjabi music. The most pure form is usually considered classical music. Since players like Ravi Shankar or Zakir Hussain [I think he was also member of the band Shakti along with John McLaughlin] are well known, I will recommend the 1968 LP Call of the Valley. Filled with santoor and flute, it's a slow and meditative album. Are there any bands from India we should know about ?
