KJ this thread is seeing you deliver big style. I never even saw a 76, ok the one in the NRM but never mainline. It seems like they were hugely popular though. The only 84 I ever saw was the red n blue departmental One, that was either at Crewe Works open day or at Wilesden, which one I seriously can't remember.
Why didn't the 82s,83s and 84s stay in service as long, was it lack of work, reliability issues or the fact the 86s basically replaced them

I’m not so sure about the 82s and 83s, but the NBL 84s suffered from the usual poor reliability (and spontaneous combustion) problems that all of their post steam traction seemed to have suffered from.
The handful of 82s and 83s that survived for ECS work out of Euston until the late 80s were remarkable survivors. Especially 83012 which was painted in Inter City livery but retained working headcode blinds until the end.

I used to love seeing these old relics at Euston.

Cheers for that Cowley. Yeah I remember seeing those in Euston too. Weren't they also used to shunt the parcel vans too. I seem to recall seeing them do so, one night my Mates n I were on Euston.

17th September seems to be a rather bleak day for me. Just daily commutes t/from work - that is with the exception of 17th September 1981 when I did the following after work leap
50021 Paddington to Evesham
50002 Evesham to Paddington

I agree Cowley. That is some tour, looks like one of the old spin n win tours I've read about.
Did many 58s get into Man Picc? saw a few at Crewe and one through Stoke one day. So.i could imagine a 58 Would be been a pretty rare sight there.
Quiet day for KJ just 2 50s. Jealous as sin. The North East got extremely excited in the early 80s, when they were on the Test trains

Certainly - the one that I amassed a mere 8,387 miles with. In pre-refurb days it was notorious for being a delicate shade of black - a combination of general grime and oil. None other than 50043 Eagle. Most memorable trip with it was on a Saturday night in January 1980 on the down sleepers when the train was routed Badminton, Bristol TM , Westbury, Taunton and on to Penzance. Was intending on going all the way but was slightly distracted at that great hub of bashing, Castle Cary, where we were crossing the "up" which was a pair 50038+50040. Pairs were rarely refused! Not advertised to call but I was not alone in joining the train crew in switching from down to up (or vice versa)

Oh that sounds like great fun. Never had a pair of 50s. Still remember my first. Waterloo-Woking, ok not massive mileage but 50027 done the honours for a 33 back.

And now for something a little different. A mid-week mini rail tour on 18th September 1986.
51656+51876 Marylebone to High Wycombe
then a mini tour to Thame and back with 55000, yes a single bubble car!
51677+51678 High Wycombe to Marylebone

Alas my notes do not give anything about the tour apart from it being the 14:05 ex High Wycombe and the 14:44 return so if anyone can throw more light on this, I'd be more than grateful.

Have you checked Six Bells Junction to see if they have anything listed?

The usual Fri night Dad & lad move spent at Preston aiming to scratch a couple of locos going to/from on 1M26 Nottingham-Blackpool returning on 1M40 Glasgow - Manchester Victoria which at this time was getting anything but the CD ETH Class 47 it was booked at that time.

As was usual I'd make as much notes as possible of what was to be seen inbetween, great nights and lots of others doing the same with platforms full of Enthusiasts be it traction bashers, scratch bashers, spotters or photographers.
How things have changed as everyone has become "normalised"!!

19/9/14 was the first day of an East Midlands Rover which I did for route coverage:

159009 Grateley - Waterloo
An unknown Northern line service to Euston
221114 Euston - Milton Keynes Central
350118 Milton Keynes - Tamworth
170520 Tamworth - Derby (caught this running a few minutes late allowing me to do the next move this afternoon instead of Sunday)
156498 Derby - Matlock
156498 Matlock - Derby
222022 Derby - Wellingborough (Via Corby, for the north curve at Syston)
43044/43049 Wellingborough - Kettering (time wasting linear hop)
222017 Kettering - Oakham (via Corby)
170398 Oakham - Peterborough

I believe I stayed in a Travelodge that night in Peterborough city centre.

Racking up those 50 miles. ;)
I meant to say that although I wasn’t particularly a 50 Basher 50042 was my favourite, a locomotive that I’m looking forward to having a run behind on the BWR this Saturday hopefully.
What a marvellous machine.

42 was another of the infamous six (50039-44) from the late 70s/early 80s that were allocated to Bristol Bath road at the time and the external appearance of all six can only be described as a delicate shade of "grime/oil". But mechanically, they were some of the best (and loudest prior to refurb).

Yeah i read that somewhere lately, that the 50s lost a lot of their grunt after their refurb. Obviously i wasnt around, sorry to make our elder statesman sound older again, to hear the hoovering sound, which earned them their nickname.

Back to 1986 and another rail tour, The Lincolnshire Coast Pullman. Bruce & I fancied a bit of a track bash so booked on this all first class trip. Plus a 58 to both Skeggie and Cleethorpes was nothing short of rate-able.
20th September 1986
58039

Yeah i read that somewhere lately, that the 50s lost a lot of their grunt after their refurb. Obviously i wasnt around, sorry to make our elder statesman sound older again, to hear the hoovering sound, which earned them their nickname.

47403 - no offence taken. More than happy to share my experiences. Just wait until OTDIH gets around to high summer and see what I turn up with ......

Post refurb, the 50s certainly became more consistent but there's nothing to beat a decent unrefurb one in good nick bowling along Brunel's billiard table doing slightly over the ton keeping HST times.

That last statement gave me a shiver down my spine Keith...
I was the small 4 year old boy standing by a foot crossing in Scorrior, Cornwall with my parents in 1977 when an unrefurbished class 50 came hammering around the bend flat out and blared its horn at us...
It’s the only time in my life that I’ve burst into tears at the sight of a train.
I realised there and then that I needed to toughen up and enjoy the thrash if I was going to have a fulfilled life.
(I wonder if it was a pre-named Triumph?)

Two significant trips for me on 22/9:

2006
390047 Virgin Record Breaker Glasgow Central-London Euston non-stop in 3 hrs 55 mins 27 secs.

1973
No haulage, but a visit to Crewe Works open day.
My notes taken on the day are long gone but the following were there
229, 243, 283, 297, 308, 313, 317, 331/4/6, 359, 371/8, 90-2/7 and 40051
403
1500/52/54/61, 1611/28, 1703/6/16/61/76/80/3, 1830/7, 1905/7/22/68/79
81001/18
83007/12
85017/21
86009/11/5/6/8
86209/12/7-24
87001/3/6-20 New build

Anybody else go to the open day in 1973?
Does anyone have a more extensive list of what was on Crewe works and station on 22/9/73?

Difficulty in finding anything for 21st September so it'll just have to be the daily commute
21st September 1989
319012+319036 St Helier to Wimbledon
3115 Wimbledon to Waterloo
5866 Waterloo to Wimbledon
319013+319059 Wimbledon to St Helier

But on 22nd September 1979, life was a little more interesting
50043 Bristol TM to Newton Abbot
47545 Newton Abbot to Exeter SD
50014 Exeter SD to Birmingham NS
plan was to come back with 14 an hour or so later but got rather way laid by
37164 Birmingham NS to Cheltenham
A short fester at Cheltenham for
50014 Cheltenham to Gloucester. I was planning on going much further west but
20058+20208 were waiting to take over a northbound service
so
20058+20208 Gloucester to Worcester SH
50008 Worcester SH to Bristol TM

OK, I racked up some 50 mileage but three unexpected winners made the day all so much better!
