29/07/16 - The Swinging 60s

A day off yesterday, but I was still up at 0700, ready for collection by the missus at 0730, and the 0750 from Hazel Grove to Stockport. Formed of two 156s (both duds), which is rare, we had a quick chat about our mortgage shenanigans, before I hopped off, leaving her to continue to Manchester for a day's work. With my Stockport-Sheffield, Sheffield-Derby and Derby-Nottingham tickets collected it was up to platform 2, a quick stop for porridge and peppermint tea, and then all aboard the slightly delayed, lightly loaded, 0828 TPE service to Cleethorpes.

The light load allowed for a window seat on the right, ideal for spotting 66548 in the sidings at Hope, and I then settled in for the remaining 30 minutes through to Sheffield, which was punctuated only by a text from Santander to say the aforementioned mortgage shenanigans were now resolved, and our mortgage offer was on its way! Proper grown-up business.

A slightly grey Sheffield greeted me as I alighted, and with 15 minutes to kill before the next Derby-bound service I set about picking off any Northern units missing from the records. 142091 was first up, squealing away towards Doncaster, whilst 144002 & 144011 waited patiently in the bay platforms for their workings to Leeds and Adwick respectively. With that I had two choices for the next leg to Derby, either a XC 220, or an EMT 222 five minutes later (both duds). Wanting to make the most of the day I bit the bullet and chose the former, which was both fresh and empty. I did wonder if I'd accidentally boarded the wrong service for a split second!

Nothing noted on the 25 minute blast down to Derby, I alighted and, having purchased a wee trail bar to keep the hunger pangs away, settled down aboard another dud, this time a XC 170 for the short hop to Nottingham. Another service transporting me and a load of fresh air about (I saw virtually nobody on any service all day), it rather sportingly crawled passed Derby RTC, allowing me to gather a number of the locos nearest the line, namely 47812, 37419 & 37025, as well as a DVT for the books by way of 82101. Sadly a good number of locos were hidden behind a yellow banana parked on the third road in, but I had a plan for that later in the day.

Enjoying the scenery as we passed Attenborough nature reserve, I almost missed 60010 at the head of 6M57 Lindsey-Kingsbury, but just snapped out of my daydream in time, thankfully. After waiting an age for clearance into Nottingham I jumped off, had a quick scout round for anything new (nothing doing there), before heading up to the tram stop. Despite having visited Nottingham on numerous occasions I've never actually used the tram -it's such a small city you can walk most of the important bits easily enough- but today they were very much required for the alleged 30 minute journey to Toton Lane. Boarding to find yet another fresh air carrier, I settled in for a rather tortuous crawl through the outer reaches of the city centre. Whilst not expecting us to fly along, I was surprised at the amount of times we crawled through junctions and round corners at near walking pace. Safe to say by the time I reached the end of the line it felt like I'd aged 30 years, never mind 30 minutes. Will not be returning to them in a hurry!

Banana devoured, I set off towards the undergrowth, hoping to see the infamous Toton complex before too long. In fact it popped up on me completely out of the blue, stretching out some distance when the undergrowth cleared. Aside from three gentlemen in camping chairs, who were clearly there for the day, the bank was deserted, and I deployed the binoculars to see what I could identify amongst the masses of locos, wagons and other bits and pieces. 68003 was nearest me, with 66762 not far behind, and after that it was a few 66s and heaps of 60s, as you'd expect. I walked the full length of the bank, and it was actually rather sad to see such a large number of locos seemingly left to rot. To the untrained eye I see no reason for this, could they not be employed somewhere on the network for something?

Having done the bank I set off for the 1 mile walk round to the back of the complex, and the other side of the line, to see if anything was hiding there. Sadly the foliage was a bit more troublesome on this side, with the lack of a bank meaning the advantage of elevation was lost. I did get a couple more numbers, but I think a return trip in the winter, when trees are bare, would probably help. That said, I think I did quite well all told, with only a few units in and around the sheds themselves remaining elusive.

From here I had decided beforehand to combine the day with a fitness test. Coming back from a long-term hip injury I have been encouraged by my physio to begin increasing my running distances again, and today seemed like the perfect opportunity to get another couple of miles under the belt. Changing into my running gear at the ASDA in Long Eaton, it was a brisk 1.5 miles to the train station, passed approximately 57 hairdressers/barbers en route. Arriving 2 minutes before a Matlock-bound service, it was all aboard a pair of dud 153s and back to Derby, again passing the RTC. Three more went in the book after the second passing, 73138, 37254 & 37116. Phase two complete.

Derby again offered up nothing apart from 66086 on its way to Peak Forest. I saw not one single 222 or 170 I needed all day, which slightly disappointed, but then I suppose I am now working with quite a small pool! With the lactic acid building a bit now I exited the station, and went for a wee jog round the back of the RTC site, where I got 37611 & 37194, before heading under the railway and back round to the station entrance on the other side of the line. I was looking to see what was on the EMT depot, but this meant traipsing through the business park, which I didn't really want to do on a weekday.

By this time it was 1500, and I decided to head back to Sheffield, this time electing for a 222 (dud, as you may have already guessed). Here it was out of the station to the nearby Travelodge, where my friend works, to blag a room for a quick shower and change before he finished his shift. We had a quick half in the Tap, before going our separate ways; he to his second job as a pizza chef(!), me back to the station for a wee bit more unit grabbing before the 1711 back to Stockport. 90 minutes yielded a fair amount, all Northern stuff:

142022
144004
144007
144021
153304
158815
158855
158908

And with that it was aboard the very cosy 1711! Standing by the accessible toilet wasn't great, but did give a view of Hope sidings once more, which threw up 66524.

And that was it. 73 units in the book, a nice day out, and over 5 miles walked/run. To celebrate I went to Stockport 'Foodie Friday' at the market and had a beer and some paella. Oh, and some pick and mix :D

A quick footnote as well that I've finally snaffled my last EMT 158, 158774, so the local wishlist is very small now.

Next trip is London on Friday, but given I need only a handful of LM 350s I doubt this will be uber-productive unless the missus wants rid of me for a couple of hours and I can get out to Bethnal Green (we're staying near Liverpool Street).

Destinations for dedicated trips are needing to become increasingly further afield now. Birmingham again might be next up, see if I can split a day between New Street (323s mainly) and Moor Street.

Sounds like a great time there!

I've spent loads of time at Toton so hopefully the following list (not mine but it helped me get some. Thanks to whoever put it together!) of the 24 class 60s in the line up front (the one next to the bank after it goes down). I know you've got a few that are easily gettable but here is the full list, unmoved for several years. It goes from the part nearest to the compound to furthest to the compound so it'll be the ones towards the middle and end of the list that you don't have.

60067-60032-60060-60086-60050-60088-
60018-60027-60037-60042-60097-60014-
60025-60031-60005-60053-60078-60023-
60089-60004-60093-60083-60006-60081

Much obliged, fishquinn.

There were a few I did see through the binoculars that I couldn't get numbers for due to the angle I was at and/or the foliage, so I'll wager a few of them will be in the list you've provided. I will have to return in a few months, see if it's any better.

I reckon there's also a few in the compound that you might never get the number for, not legally anyway!

The ones in the compound shunt around fairly regularly but the ones in that line haven't moves for years and years so I think it'll be safe for you to claim that you've seen them.

Wow that sure turfed out a lot of scores!

Good news that the mortgage issues are now resolved, happy days :)

Hopefully you'll still get something out of London when you go down next, it's surprising what you can score out of Mandatory Moves sometimes. Good luck though!

Have booked a day to Nottingham on Friday and included Plusbus. Not sure if this extends to cover the whole area of NET. What I may do is visit Toton sheds. Can anyone give me any idea as to directions from the tram stop and how far it is roughly.
Thanks

Depends on whether you fancy a walk across some fields or not. If you do then the below took me 10 minutes:

Cross-country route

From there you're on the bank, and can walk along parallel to the compound.

Good clear out on the 60s, but I agree the tram isn't the fastest over the new routes (apart from a couple short sections). The best part of Nottingham Trams for speed is on the original network from Hucknall where it runs alongside the Robin Hood line

All back on track re the mortgage, just got to constantly harass solicitors now. Useless individuals.

I'm going via Crewe, so hopefully they'll be some quirky stuff floating around there. That and whatever is on Wembley/Willesden.

I'm by no means a tram expert, but when you compare the speed of it to the metrolink the latter is like being aboard a 395!

In a turn of events, I have an afternoon off on Wednesday next week, so I need to head out somewhere. Contemplating Leeds again I think (including a trip out to Midland Road on the bus) or if the weather is rubbish maybe Liverpool. Other suggestions for where I can feasibly do between 1200-2000 are welcome.

They wont be if they find a fault with your title, that missing conveyance from 1932, that extension without planning permission, that restrictive covenant, the adopted road, the service charge arrears, the fact the owners are divorcing, that the owners have died, a boundary dispute or any of the other problems regularly thrown up with a purchase.

May i assume you are a first time buyer? ;)

You may ;)

To be fair, the second solicitor we enlisted last week is an absolute star, and will get things done in good time and keep me updated. The first however sat on our file for a month, and then promptly left the firm in question without handing anything over and without uttering a word to anybody. Safe to say when a bill for £300 came through it was swiftly sent back with a stern covering note explaining why payment would not be forthcoming!

no worries - it will be fine. Most purchases go through without an issue. The solicitors are worth the money when an issue does arise.

04/08/16 - You just can't get the Staff(ord) these days!

With the working week done by Wednesday I had a number of jobs to do on Thursday. First up was the car in for a service (£117), then the solicitors (£300), and finally the surveyors (£380). At each and every establishment I visited the front of house staff were delightfully pleasant, but utterly hopeless. I just got a nod, a smile and then a vacant expression, and you could see the cogs whirring furiously in their minds each time a question was asked. Thankfully I then got to speak to the experts, who were far more useful.

Come 1500 - now significantly lighter in the old bank balance - I was done, and decided to head out to Crewe and/or Stafford for the evening to do a bit of number chasing. The 1536 from Hazel Grove dropped me in Stockport 9 minutes later, and perusing the options I opted for Stafford via Crewe to avoid the dreaded Voyager. Instead it was aboard a dud 390, and the short blast to Crewe. Alighting on platform 5, I spied 66156 in the bays opposite, but with nothing else catching the eye it was aboard a dud 350 for the hop down to Stafford. Nothing of note in the LNWR site, however I did add another 68 to the books as 68001 was noted trundling into Basford Hall from the south. Looked mighty fine.

Stafford arrived, I alighted, and the heavens then opened. Taking shelter under the canopy on platforms 3/4 I got the realtime map on the go, and it wasn't long before the 66s began to roll through. A few duds in the mix, including 66156 again, but over the next few hours I picked up 66184, 66250, 66426, (which came down from Crewe just to change ends and go all the way back to Gresty Bridge) 66543, 66553, 66558 & 66779, which looked glorious in its BR green livery as 'Evening Star.' I also ticked off another 70, with 70011 doing the honours.

Away from the locos, the 325s also took another few steps towards completion with 325001, 325003 & 325013 all going in the book, coming as they did from the two Warrington-Willesden workings (lovely bit of alliteration!). I forgot the northbound Willesden-Sheildmuir working comes through at 1830ish, and was in Starbucks getting a peppermint tea as it went through, so I'm hoping the two remaining units, 006 & 016, weren't on that

With the two remaining 221s not showing themselves during my stay, and the 390s and 220s cleared, the only ToC winner was 350370. Still significant however, as it now means the 350/3s are cleared.

With that it was 2100, and time to depart. I almost missed the 2101 XC service back to Stockport, instead waiting dumbly for the 2104 VT service to Piccadilly which I thought was stopping at Stockport. I only realised as the 220 pulled in to platform 5 (with me on P3) that the 2104 was going via Styal, so it was a mad dash up the stairs, boarding at the local door (with a very attractive guard ;)) and then heading down through the vaguely pungent carriages to settle in for the 30 minutes back to Stockport. There was a dud FL 66 on the binliners sadly, so with that a very quiet 156 took me back to Hazel Grove.

05/08/16 - Don't Peak too soon!

Annual leave day two, and it was to be a trip to London for a wedding. Firstly however it was to Tesco for supplies, as instructed by the missus. Given said store is only 15 minutes from Peak Forest I thought it rude not to pop in and see what was going on, particularly as it was such a lovely morning, so off we popped. Arriving, there was a fair bit going on, which is rare for a weekday morning. 66200 was idling near the mess room/house, whilst a dud 66 was busy shunting the hoppers for the second trip of the day down to Hope Street. 60074 returned a short while later, having taken a rake of wagons down to Lostock Works in the early hours, I assume for repair/wheel lathing, whilst a further pair of dud FL 66s passed through hauling empties to Tunstead. I did pick up 60066 as I left, with the aforementioned Hope Street working moving out to the sidings allowing for a view of it.

Home via Tesco, it was then down to Stockport for the 1304 down to Euston, via Crewe. Indeed the first number in the book for the afternoon was 66176, working from Dowlow down to Theale with a lovely shiny rake of new(ish) DB wagons. Basford Hall threw up nothing, but before we hit the WCML proper I did get 70006 at Stafford. Settling back and enjoying the sunshine there was nothing of note until Tring, where 350118 took my 350 needs list down to seven, with Wembley yard proving an absolute feast for once, with no fewer than five new spots (66095, 66164, 66767, 90037 & 90039).

With little to do for the afternoon the missus suggested a trip from our Liverpool Street base to Stratford for a bit of shopping and an amble around the Olympic Park. Seizing the opportunity to grab a few further numbers I suggested the train might be a better option than the tube, so we set off for the whiz up the GEML. Considering the total time in and around Stratford station was about 10 minutes all told I did remarkably well to get 315808, 321314, 321421, 321430, 321437, 360108 & 360110, all of which were bonuses!

After a weekend of £9.50 G&Ts (The downside of attending a wedding in a rooftop Shoreditch private members club!) I had zero inclination to do anything other than sleep on the way back yesterday, but was just about awake long enough at Nuneaton to catch 153365.

Next up is yet another trip to London tomorrow (I would have stayed there today had work told me I was going down again!), followed by an afternoon in Leeds on Wednesday, where I hope to pick off a number of the remaining Northern units, and also head out to Midland Road on bus/foot for a better look at what is stabled there.

Sounds like a good time with lots more numbers in the book! I'm jealous about 66767 - it's one of my last 4 required 66s in the country. I'm also annoyed to see 153365 there - it's my last required LM 153 for haulage.

Same here regarding that 153 :(

Anyhow, sounded like a good evening trip to Stafford and a mini day trip to London. Stratford is a good station to grab various 317s, 321s, 360s, 315s, 90s, plus 378s :)

Mega ouch to the ching on those G&Ts, my eyes nearly popped out of my head when I saw that!

Some good results overall, even if Stafford wasn't super productive. Loved the titles by the way :D

Struck lucky with it really, as it was one of two left to grab!

I've spent a couple of evenings there (Stratford), find it quite enjoyable given the variety it offers. All set against the backdrop of the Olympic Park and Westfield as well which offers something a bit different to look at when the units aren't in and out.

The music was so loud I didn't hear what the barman said in terms of a price, automatically handed him £10 and almost succumbed to shock when he handed me 50p in change! I switched to the vodka & tonics after that, but they were still £7.50 a pop. I can get a round for that at home!

Regards Stafford, I don't think I'll be returning for a while now, as I'm only going to be there for the freight, which can be sporadic if you time it wrong. I have got a mad desire to try and do 24 hours at somewhere like Water Orton or Tamworth, see just how many locos I can wrack up whilst still having some passenger stuff to tick off, but whether I actually ever go through with it is debatable!

It's been a while, in relative terms, since my last update. Time to rectify that!

I've picked up a few dribs and drabs over the last couple of weeks, starting with 158830 taking a break in the sidings outside Piccadilly, before filling in for the paupers WAG one afternoon. Nine ATW 158s to go. Arriving at work after a couple of days off (still reeling from that £9.50 G&T!) I was informed it would be 'hugely beneficial' to go down to London the next day for yet another pointless meeting. Sigh. Nonetheless it would give me a chance to snaffle a few further numbers, so, £314 later tickets were purchased and off we went!

Aboard the 0707, there was nothing to see until we hit the WCML proper, as per usual. We had to wait at Colwich Jn for 66593 to pass across us onto the Up Slow, but from there it was a seamless run down to Euston, picking up 66217 & 66241 as we passed. I also caught sight of a Chiltern DVT (82302) on the bridge over Hampstead way, sadly couldn't track down the 68 on t'other end though. Euston arrived, and I managed to get my final Freightliner 90 in the book, with 90044 sitting at the London end of the recently arrived sleeper.

The return journey was far less productive, with all the freight that passed being dragged by duds. I did get 350129 in Euston sidings - only six required now - as well as a WCR outside Crewe, 47854, but that was it.

Midweek saw an afternoon in Leeds. Scurrying down Deansgate for the 1151 TPE from Victoria, only to then sit on it for 8 minutes whilst they tried to close the doors, I settled back once we eventually left, picking up 155347 as I left. Leeds arrived 49 minutes later, and I alighted to undertake my usual sweep of the platforms, before exiting the station and heading towards the city centre, intending to catch the bus to Midland Road. Sadly it would appear the entirety of Leeds city centre is currently gripped by a mass of roadworks, and the place was at a standstill. Locals noted nothing had moved for 40 minutes, so I instead fired up the ol' Google Maps and set off on the 30 minute walk to the Freightliner depot. Whilst not the most scenic of routes, the early afternoon sunshine did provide a pleasant climate in which to stroll.

Midland Road arrived, and I set about picking off the locos calling the place home for the day. D1645 looked glorious at the front of the yard, however the same could not be said of 66596, which was missing a number of wheels! 66509 & 66616 were also in attendance (66s now down over 50% done!), as were two 70s, 70001 & 70009. This leaves just 70013 of the FL 70s required. Whilst on the bridge with the binoculars I also saw 158793 whiz by.

With that it was back to Leeds, again on foot. A good 4 miles for under the belt for the hip (2 miles each way), with only a slight twinge when I slipped on a coke can. Success.

Once back on the station I settled at the far end of platform 8, and spent a good two hours noting the comings and goings (Apologies for the lack of screenshot today, cannot get trainlogger working properly):

43: 43303
142: 142021, 142050, 142089
144: 144018
153: 153324, 153328, 153330, 153332, 153351, 153352, 153359, 153363
155: 155341, 155342, 155343, 155344
158: 158754, 158758, 158792, 158849, 158853, 158906
322: 322482, 322484, 322485
333: 333002, 333003, 333008, 333010, 333011, 333013, 333014, 333015

A good mix of units, with a major dent made into the 153s (Six Northern units left), 155s (Just 155346 left) and 333s (Just three left). The minor victory of clearing the 322s has also been achieved. A bonus XC 43 as well, but sadly all the VTEC locos and DVTs that came and went were duds.

This leaves me with just 46 Northern units to go (including the four 'new' 319s that are due to arrive soon), the majority of which are 142s and 158s.

This week has seen another couple of ATW 158s, with 158821 & 158833 doing the honours. Seven ATW 158s to go.

And that is me up to date! I do plan on doing a review of the wishlist soon, but safe to say there is still a very long way to go. The next dedicated trip won't be for a while, as house stuff is getting serious now, to which I need to dedicate most of my spare time. When I do get a day off I might see about a first train/last train journey to Cardiff, Peterborough or Scotland.

Aside from the pointless journey to London, which I hope work were paying for, then it sounds like a lot of progress lately!

Good luck with the house stuff, hope it all goes nice and smooth!

Ouch to the price of the ticket to London! Like Tech, I certainly hope that your work paid for it! Quite a few more winners there - congrats on getting more than 50% of the 66s. Is that including the ones on the continent? I need 3 of them in the UK now.

No way I'd be paying £314 for any train ticket (save for may be an ALR in a few years!), it all went on the company credit card!

All being well the house will be sorted for October, then it'll be weekends of painting and decorating. Thankfully the New Mills to Marple line runs by in the valley below, so I will have to confine my spotting to workings there for a while!

Indeed, plenty going on there, particularly when you throw in the freight as well.

I'm not sure that it does include the continental 66s, no. If truth be told I'm quite glad this is the case, don't fancy trekking around Poland to plug gaps!

A note as well that I took the number of 66s in the book to a nice round 200 last night with 66554 doing the honours.

There's only 483 extant 'built for the UK' 66s around. You can knock off a round 90 which have been exported/modified for European use. All the Polish ones have stayed abroad, the majority of the French ones have been home.

I need 66241 for sight still, 66217 seen a few times! So 554 was past halfway for you!

Interesting stuff, many thanks. This appears to tally with what appears in trainlogger, they have 393 66s listed as currently residing in the UK. Rounding up that gives me 51% of them thus far.

I'm just hoping 66953 will eventually be seen one day for me, last Freightliner one to see and it's an annoying gap!

Thank Goodness work was paying for your London tickets! An ALR will cost you far more than £314 ;) October is coming around slowly!

I agree, great progress all round! Some very annoying gaps to plug still, I see.

I sympathise with your disdain for the drinks prices inside the M25, although it's not just confined to the bars... my local Spar wants £4/pint for Brewdog Punk IPA!

Oh I know that, but at least it'd be a sum paid voluntarily to go to places I actually want to go! I might even be able to convince the missus to come along and turn it into a bit of a holiday, but probably only if we went first class!

making good progress there!

Many thanks, Rich. How are Darlo findings life in the Conference North?

I'm not best pleased our game at your place is midweek, there's no way I will be able to get there now :(

I had just about adjusted to the stupid beer prices by the time I left to return home, but £10 for a drink is just beyond my tiny Northern mind!

Played 4 won 3 drawn 1. How are you going?

I cant get to many home games so was a bit annoyed the Curzon Ashton game w as a Monday night. We dont have many mid week games this year.

The FC United game ( away) is all ticket on BH monday so might not get one which means another easy game for me passes. I like a nice trip to Manchester. Lots to do and see.
