I learned to read from the roundabout names on the MK Atlas! I don't quite understand why this has turned into another ignorance based MK bashing thread... >_>

I commute out of London from Hanwell/ Drayton Green to West Drayton. Fairly busy but never usually struggle for a seat. Much better than commuting inwards!

Why feel sorry for them? Surely not because any London-centric person would think they're leaving what's perceived to be the centre of the universe and entering realms where maps are only marked with 'here be dragons'?
I find comments like these quite unusual as a significant number of people in London are not actually from London, and those that are never seem averse to moving away either permanently or on travel. Conversely, having lived in both Bristol and Birmingham for a number of years, and having spoke to friends or family in other cities, there are a huge number of people who still live in the city in which they were born, and very rarely ever leave their city except to go abroad on holiday.

The BBC move to Salford has given VT a nice little earner. A recent magazine article about a Breakfast News presenter told who she commutes North every evening returning the next lunchtime. I also heard how BBC purchased 24,000 rail tickets Manchester-Euston in the first year.

Just have to mention Milton Keynes and some ill-informed person starts slagging it off.

The Daily Mail and the likes are keen to report facts like that. However, what is ignored is the reverse of the above occurred before the move to Salford. Alan Hansen and Alan Shearer were among the names who live in the North and used to travel to London for TV work. While if you look at ITV News (where all national programs are done from London) at weekends they can draft in Andrea Byrne (South Wales based) and Lucy Meacock (Cheshire based) while one of the program editors is former Granada Reports editor Richard Frediani who didn't relocate from Lancashire when he moved roles.

If I think who it is, they only do trip 3 days per week. You have to wonder whether this is a good use of taxpayers money as the newsreader will be doing this on expenses.

Maybe someone who likes roundabouts a lot?
I'd suggest the Roundabout Appreciation Society, but the lack of features on Milton Keynes makes me cautious in doing so.

Now, if I were an unscrupulous newspaper reporter: "Our Taxes Funding Branson's Virgin Empire". ;)

You're thinking of Susanna Reid.

In London the rota was:
Mon-Thurs: Bill Turnbull & Sian Williams
Fri-Sun: Charlie Stayt & Susanna Reid*

In Salford it is:
Mon-Wed: Bill Turnbull & Susanna Reid
Thurs-Sat: Charlie Stayt & Louise Minchin
Sun: Other presenters

* Different arrangements applied weeks when Susanna presented Sunday Morning Live from Belfast. Susanna is of course not the only BBC presenter to work from different locations - John Humpherys and Jeremy Paxman have both been doing that for a long time.

One of my 'posh' friends lived in Kent and commuted to Liverpool twice a week (company paid of course!)

Oh, and not exactly a friend, but a person I know who lives in Norwich, gets the first train of the day direct to Liverpool!!!

I suppose one problem with going out of London is that you are travelling from a high house price area to a potentially lower wage area.

And this is it in a nutshell.

The a 'normal' 2 bedroom house costs £600 to rent up north. The same in London would be around £2,000. A 100 mile annual season would be around £7,000.

On top of that, a £50,000 job in London is £35,000 in the regions.

So this is a waste of £36,000 a year.

Typically, perhaps. Which is why commuting or of london isn't common.

But due to lower levels of workers skilled in certain areas sometimes there's something paying well comes up.

My wife's current job pays 20% more than her last one which required her to spend a lot of time in the South East a lot and in London one week a month.

I'm also surprised by the number of people commuting the other way at East Croydon, where do they work?
