Planning trips vs strikes

Having been left somewhat impecunious for the rest of June by last year's trip to Wales, I plan to split my next holiday across two separate midweek periods. Would it be prudent to book days in consecutive weeks and then cancel the ones I don't need so that I have a backup plan?
