I think the original plans for Euston have been scaled back to save money although the original plan was to rebuild the station.
I doubt it was a serious official proposition at any time. It’s just one of those subjects that keeps being regularly repeated for no logical reason. Was the hope of rebuilding the Euston Arch part of the HS2 works or a separate idea?
Thought it would be highly unlikely to happen, due to the costs and practically of transportation and constructionI doubt it was a serious official proposition at any time. It’s just one of those subjects that keeps being regularly repeated for no logical reason.
A foot passage to Euston Sq. was planned as part of the HS2 programme. Basically, they knock through the headwalls at the Eastern end of the Eus. Sq. platforms and mine tunnels through to a revised LU concourse at Euston. Thusly, there's no need to go up to street level as now. Also planned to be a new entrance on the corner of Gower St on the south side of the Euston Road.
That's a shame. Euston is in desperate need of at least a Kings Cross level upgrade, if not a total rebuild.I think the original plans for Euston have been scaled back to save money although the original plan was to rebuild the station.

It'd be nice, but Euston is nothing like the dive Kings Cross was - it's airy, high ceilinged and in my view quite pleasant.
It needs the following:-
1. Completely new bogs, this time with proper ventilation as that's why they whiff
2. A means of solving the Euston scrum, but I'm not convinced that needs changes to the station, it more needs changes to the method of operation of the station (there are a few options, but there are threads for that so I won't go into it here)
3. The bit outside neatening up a bit
That's about it, really. I find it quite a pleasant station, all in all, and when the HS2 bit is built it'll be a fair bit quieter anyway.
The concourse isn’t too bad (though nowhere near as good as King X or St Pancras) but the platforms area at Euston is utterly miserable with the atmosphere of a multi-storey car park. Natural light desperately needed.
I agree, although I note that the 8-11 island is a bit more welcoming than the others because it is recognised that people will wait there. The platform's at Euston really aren't that bad. I spend a lot of time hanging around P9/10 waiting for the Overground and don't mind being down there. There's much worse platforms around the country. I guess it helps that the noisy Voyagers are often on platforms away from the 8/9/10/11 island.
Agreed, but how much of the platform area does it actually cover? There are quite a few places where the ceiling is full height and opportunities for letting in more light seem to be available.Very unlikely, unfortunately. Removing the parcel deck would be hugely costly and disruptive, but if that was being done it'd be likely to allow a development of some sort to replace it.
The idea at Euston is that you don't spend time down there.
Only about 100 years or so late!![]()
Depends if it does actually become all one station or not.If the tunnel through to Euston Square is completed, will the existing Tube station be renamed simply "Euston" as it will essentially be one station?
and dont forget Bank/Monument.Depends if it does actually become all one station or not.
Seems from the plans that it will remain 2 stations, albeit now linked by a subway under the road.
While there's obviously many examples of similar situations having two names, none of them have involved a recent renaming.
When they built the Hackney Central-Hackney Downs link - which unlike what those plans suggest for Euston-Euston Square is inside the fare barriers - they kept it as two station names.
There’s a reasonably recent (May) thread specifically about Euston LU changes here:So will the passageways from Euston Square come into where the escalators are. up to Euston's main concourse?
Or will they be within the fare-zone ("airside") - which might support a name-change better? I think the latter would better help usage of Euston Square, and relieve Kings Cross on the SSL somewhat as an interchange option, even though it won't be brilliant either. Will add the Charing X branch connection too.
What the ###****!!! has value for money got to do with it? I doubt if the original arch covered its costs. It was an act of vandalism to remove it and if it is at all possible to reverse that vandalism money shouldn't come into it. On another thread is the story of recent vandalism to one of the new Merseyrail trains, which apparently will cost over £1k to put right: you could argue that's not value for money. Admittedly the Euston Arch (even if most of the original stones can be recovered) would cost many times that to rebuild, but the principle is the same.Thought it would be highly unlikely to happen, due to the costs and practically of transportation and construction
As much as it would be nice to see at Euston Station again, it wouldn't offer value for money
Surely all the tacky refreshment shacks etc that litter the area outside the concourse could be cleared away. Maybe the bus station could be resited too. Originally wasn't the arch in between the two lodges that are still in situ close to the Euston Road?So where would this Euston Arch be placed? The original was in what is now the station concourse, and there won't be any room for it there. It would be utterly out of place and a total inconvenience.
I believe it was somewhere around the barrier line for the suburban platforms.Surely all the tacky refreshment shacks etc that litter the area outside the concourse could be cleared away.
