Welcome to the Speculative Discussion sub-forum! Now that it's been running for several years it is probably a good moment to refresh everyone as to why we have this section and what its purpose is.

The idea for this sub-forum was put to the Forum Staff by a forum member in early 2018. One of the ways we gain feedback is to ask our members directly, in person, at Forum Meets.

The idea was discussed in depth at a Forum Meal in February 2018, which was very well attended and occurred at a time when a huge influx of speculative posts was being posted on the forum. The feedback received at that meal was unanimously in favour of setting up this sub-forum.

Further discussions took place over the next six months and the section was inaugurated in August 2018, after we were satisfied the majority of the membership was in favour. We are aware that some people were not in favour of this change, however our findings strongly suggested the majority were, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

The reasons for the change are many and varied but the main overriding principle is that before the change there was conflict caused by the following:
  • People who made proposals were, on occasions, being shouted down for making them, and occasionally ridiculed or even insulted.
  • People who wanted to discuss progress and update threads were frustrated that these were, on occasions, being hijacked by people wanting to discuss alternative schemes or alterations to existing schemes.
  • It was not always easy to differentiate between what is actually happening and the ideas that people had.
We did not want to dampen the spirits of the huge number of members who want to post ideas and we therefore did not feel comfortable imposing restrictions on speculative posts. We did discuss the proposals with some key people who post a lot of ideas and suggestions and found them to be broadly in favour of the move.

Therefore we created this sub-forum to give a dedicated section to discuss things that are speculative, giving those that want to talk about them a dedicated place to do so whilst also helping to contain it in one place so those that are more interested in what is actually happening don't have to wade through significant amounts of posts that are just someone's own ideas.

Hopefully that clarifies a few things and, as always, we are open to feedback at Forum Meets but if you're not able to get to one then please do feel free to contact a member of Forum Staff or use the Contact Us function.
