Does anyone know the latest situation with Pontypool and New Inn?

Google shows the old car park as closed, whilst search results suggest the new car park is opening in January? (The source is a December edition of one of the local papers)

TfW (well I think they pull from National Rail) say nothing about the car parking at Pontypool and New Inn.

Pontypool was a great place to park for free when taking Marches trains, but a bit risky to turn up and find they have similar high prices to Abergavenny on the new car park.

The park and ride facility at Pontypool and New Inn Station has cost £7.1 million as part of redeveopment and Torfaen Borough Council, which has been responsible for the project, has said it is hoped it can open in January – which will be just two months short of three years since work started in March 2022.

The 140 space car park was announced in 2019 as one of the first projects on the proposed South Wales Metro system intended to revolutionise public transport across the region but despite an expectation it would open by summer 2023 it has remained fenced off.

Sorry to bump my own thread, but if anyone has any information about the current position at Pontypool and New Inn station that would be greatly appreciated.

Google is still insisting that the original station car park is closed, but the new car park has not yet appeared on the map. The various official websites are still saying nothing about the car park.

I know Google can be wrong, as per this Aldi on a farm case yesterday (quote below). Link: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c9wlw1r0j84o

A non-existent Aldi has wreaked havoc on a rural village after mysteriously appearing on Google Maps.
People in Cyffylliog, Denbighshire, said a stream of cars had come through the area and a milk tanker got stuck after a pin was added saying Aldi had a store there.
While some residents in the village of 500 people acknowledged the funny side of the mishap, others said it was very "serious".
Google said the listing had been updated and it "worked around the clock" to rectify suspicious behaviour.
A farm below Cyffylliog's name was changed to show an Aldi store there, prompting many people to show up in recent weeks looking to do their weekly shop.
It is not known if it is an error or a wind-up, but Aldi's own website still has the wrong location listed on its map, external.

I think it just opened today, you could park in the new car park and the stairs weren't blocked to go to the platform. They've not advertised it very well, but people have been posting about it on facebook as well.

The new car park at Pontypool & New Inn has finally opened

Posted on: Friday 28 February 2025
NEW Railway station 1

A new park and ride facility at Pontypool and New Inn Railway Station has opened today.

It comes after the Office of Rail and Road authorised the new facility this week allowing it to enter service.

Thank you for the update and welcome to the forum.

I was in Pontypool yesterday, collecting my car from the old car park. There were many more cars in the old car park than when I parked there on Thursday morning. I always sit near the front of the train from Piccadilly, so did not look at the new car park.

I do hope the new car park will also be free.

Probably doing a soft launch in case of any early teething issues.

3 cars in this morning as viewed from 1W13. This week I am on from Port Talbot so not using Pontypool. Will try the new car park next week.

Going south, I need to check if the old car park is still in use as insurance.

Cwmbran had a few spaces as well.

Is having English in faint grey the new standard? Hardly helps clarity on something you often only get a glance at!
it is nothing but discrimination against the English only speaking majority at the behest of the Welsh Government. If this was reversed, the nationalists would be out spraying out the English version.

Finally tested this out. Seems to be free (or at least there are no signs explaining payment).

There were a few others in the car park as well, but I was there at 0600 Thursday and then 21:30 yesterday. Maybe it gets busier during the day.

It was nice not needing to drive through New Inn, but the roadworks outside the car park do need finishing.

I visited recently driving into the new car park (free) from the A4043. It really is a vast improvement having this new direct access into a large car park from the A4043 plus the new bridge with lifts. Unfortunately, those using the car park on the east side must still use the subway.

Whilst present, a 2 coach 197 called on the Cardiff to Holyhead run. The train was rammed with people standing. Not good still having 2 coach trains on The Marches despite using units destined eventually for the Cambrian line.

Good to see more cars in the car park in those photos @Envoy

Hopefully, user numbers will pick up and more of the pass-through trains will stop.

I agree about the 2-car 197s, but my understanding is that the Holyhead services remain 2-car. It is only the Manchesters that should now be 5-car every hour.
