Private schools tend to have shorter terms than state ones, probably a hangover from when most of them were boarding schools and the pupils had to travel home at the end of term.

You wouldn’t have thought that Princess of Wales was a particularly hazardous occupation, but the last one to become Queen was Mary of Teck in 1910.

A tad misleading. The only Princess of Wales who didn't become Queen between Mary of Teck and the current incumbent was Princess Diana. During much of the meantime the Prince of Wales was Edward, who became Duke of Windsor, and George VI had no sons.

I went to a private school and yes, we had shorter terms. But it had never been a boarding school - the reason for shorter terms was really simple; we had longer days

Term dates always vary by county. By me, the schools all broke up yesterday for two weeks.
Most private schools break up a week before the state ones. It allows them the book their holidays in a cheaper week.

Up the creek
The longer the holidays are, the fewer days that the private schools have to spend money feeding and accommodating their inmates. (This is getting off the subject.)
