It was recently pointed out on a brief that even if you are off duty if you are in a non public area you can be tested and can dismissed if found to test positive for alcohol etc.

I've known staff to be warned of this after issues in a messroom with off-duty staff after a night out...

Re the above- can rail staff use station toilet facilities free of charge (with i.d) as clearly you wouldn't want to use the mess room ones if you have been out drinking.

I have heard this on a few TOCs and there was a story of a DM on my old TOC being sacked for using his office to call a taxi after a night out however it's commonplace at some depots on my route to have drivers in the mess rooms waiting for trains home after a night out. Most depots don't have any managers there after dark anyway but it's certainly something not enforced by my employer.

I know of some people in the company who need to be told, "I know we issue you with a lot of uniform, doesn't mean you need to wear it all at once..." Quite a few graduates need to be told this.

Can you explain more, please?

What do they issue you with that isn't expected to be worn?

My first image was two suit coats one over the other but that can't be what you mean.

Something like uniform trousers but not the uniform shirt?

What do new graduates wear sometimes and what would have been better?

I have uniform in terms of clothing and PPE for use on depots, workshops and on site. Provided my PPE meets the applicable standards I can use my own equipment if I want to, and/or get changed before leaving the depot.

In terms of graduates (in my area of work), they tend to be issued with a lot of stuff...

Those who 'wear it all at once' will be dressed head to toe in company uniform whenever going anywhere near a site, usually with too much high visibility clothing as well...
