I subscribe to Rail (fortnightly & good for news & also columns such as Barry Does' fare dealer etc) and also Modern Railways (good for analysis of current issues by Roger Ford's column.)

Subscribed to RAIL, as above, its fortnightly. You can buy it in WHSmiths, good magazine shops. I also read Modern Railways, and the odd Today's Railways.
(: All available at Smiths.

Hi Oliver

I read RAIL, Modern Railways and Today's Railways. If I was going to choose just one, it would be RAIL, because it's fortnightly, has a good breadth of regular features covering fares, (Barry Doe), infrastructure, rolling stock and freight, plus Christian Wolmar's column and Inudstry Insider, so you also get a good range of opinions!

I get Rail Professional sent to me through the post free because I'm staff. Its "The business magazine for railway managers". Very informative though- and usually a few well paid jobs going in the back.

For non-staff I think its £4 odd.

RAIL magazine is prob your best all rounder has improved alot in recent months and is fortnightly.

However another good title is Railways illustrated has alot of general british content, some european and preserved news as well as good articles.

Todays Railways UK is also a good UK one.

Modern Railways is a very good read but might be a bit too heavy reading for you?

Rail Express is just pictures and models and a funny size too not worth the money!

my advice is to pop down your local library (WHsmiths!) and have a read for yourself of the above titles and judge for yourself ;o)

Just pictures and models? Strange, I seem to remember having written between 5,000 and 10,000 words for this issue - none of them modelling. There are columns on Locos, Units, Coaches, Wagons, Railtours, Liveries, Preservation, Ireland, Time Traveller Nostalgia etc. The modellers section also includes stuff of interest to non-modellers, for example the D&E files this issue contains a detail history of one batch of Class 56s.

RE may well have a greater photographic content than some magazines, but at the same time the repro of the pictures is far moch better than some of the others. Obviously no magazine will appeal to all, but 'just pictures and models' RE certainly isn't!

Geordie back from exile.
I know there is usually a swift response to queries posted on this forum but in this case the first reply looks to have come before the question. :D

OK I'm guessing it is to do with the editing of the post but it looks funny.;)

Sorry but that is my own opinion of it, never find anything interesting in it these days and can't stand the awkward paper size!, used to be a good read years ago, i had every issue up to about 2 yrs ago but now i just don't buy it, as for pictures the internet has taken over that slot, but i know many buy it so your writing is not in vain, just not my cup of tea ;o)

How much is Rail Magazine and would I be able to find it at local newsagents, WHSmiths etc?

Rail is available all over including most major supermarkets. It does depend what swings your jackal. Rail and Railway Magazine (more so) interest those who want to know about the politics, the news, etc. The rest are more for (and this is a swinging stereotype) the train spotter.

As others have said it depends what you're in to. With many magazines being monthly, news can get out of date pretty quickly - especially given a lot of it is on the internet and posted on forums like these.

I hardly ever buy magazines (unless I am having a trip somewhere and will need something to keep my occupied) as I can get a lot of stuff off the internet but if I do buy magazines it's mostly for the opinion and analysis which is missing a lot from internet resources (not just on the railways but for news in general). When I do buy magazines I buy Rail as it's more up-to-date and has some columnists I like. I used to buy Modern Railways but find it's got too many penguins in it, but it does have a lot of useful information.

I know it's not about the up-to-date scene, but I do find that "backtrack" often has a few interesting articles pitched in the not-too-distance past. This tends to be an impulse buy after flicking through at WH Smith.

What I do always remind people is that the railway forums are good for news but the rail magazines are much better for the analysis

Personally Railways Illustrated is my favourite as it has a good mix of modern, heritage, loco traction, historic stories and brilliant pictures, also sometimes buy Modern Railways. I've bought Railway Magazine and RAIL once before and they OK too. Chris

I'm a Rail Express man, myself. 'Though I really don't like the new format - it's almost too big to balance on the loo cistern. I find Rail and Modern Railways too 'business' oriented, preferring the 'enthusiast' slant of RE. I also get Today's Railways Europe every month. It's great for conversations like:
'What's that you're reading?'
'It's a specialist magazine with continental action'
'Phoar!'
-- Unfurl TRE --
'Oh...'
