There's a lot of this about - under airport flight paths, over pubs that play music, and now apparently around rail installations.

Rail activities at Craigentinny have been there longer than most of the houses in the vicinity
http://www.edinphoto.org.uk/0_edin_t/0_edinburgh_transport_railways_craigentinny_9449_c1929.htm

and is a pretty silly thing to overlook if you're buying property. What is it with this breed that moves into an urban neighbourhood and expects the ambience of a Highland cottage?

To be fair, the council elections are coming up in three months, and the Councillor involved is Labour - an endangered species in these parts

Why do people often complain that they can't hear themselves think? Is it because such people often seem to find this process particularly difficult, and they need to concentrate really hard at it?

When I lived in Cambridge they built flats on the site of the old steam shed. A couple of 47's were often in adjacent sidings at night. It was about a week before the residents started to complain about the noise of the trains.

It's like the idiots who buy a house under the flight path of Heathrow airport then complain about the noise and pollution of the aircraft.

People along the reopened line from Stirling to Longannet made the same complaints. They tried, and failed, to have late night freight services stopped despite it being well known that the intention was to reopen the line.

Sililarly, residents under the flight path for Belfast City airport are prone to giving off about tiles 'flying' off the roofs of their houses and noise from late night flights (which are actually going to/from Aldergrove).

Dont buy or rent a place next to a fekkin railway line or yard then!!!!

Simples.

My thoughts exactly. You should always assumbe if you by a property close to the railway such as a disused line that there is always a possibility of it being re-opened for use by passenger or freight trains.

I have seen this at the posy office near to where I live with a couple of people moaning about some freights trains using the line (This during the weekends where the mainline between Cardiff & Swansea was closed and trains were running over the Tondu - Margam line.)

I wonder if there were any complaints when the Vale of glamorgan line was re-opened to passenger trains.

I hope the maintenance staff are ensuring they test horns in the middle of the night to make sure they are in working order, and then the task is repeated when the driver preps the train early in the morning <D.

Not that simple any more, railway companies now have a duty of care towards neighbours so even if the railway was there longer, the railway still have to bend over backwards to be seen as a thoughtful neighbour.

Absolutely stupid but that is the way of the world today,

I thought that was during silly season, ahem marching season when the local chavs like to throw some molotovs around?

From reading the article, which apparently some who have commented haven't done, they are not complaining about the depot being there. They are complaining about the increase in night-time noise from the increased work being carried out at the depot. It also appears as though East Coast have been consulting with the residents and are attempting to reduce the problem.

Looks like a reasonably good news story to me, with East Coast taking a proactive, neighbourly approach, rather than a few NIMBYs having a whinge.

In Retirement.
I remember back in BR days we once got a letter from a man who had bought a house backing onto the line, demanding that we change the existing jointed track to CWR immediately.

We passed his letter round the office until everyone had had a laugh, and then put it straight in the bin.

scotsman article said:
....Helen Sinclair, who owns a guest house on Stanley Street, said: “I had a lady who was staying in my holiday house at the bottom of the garden complain that she couldn’t sleep....

I'll be honest, if I had to stay in a garden shed, I'd be unable to sleep either and that's before we have the trains to contend with. Hope they didn't charge the poor dear full room rate. :D

That's what I gathered as well - some of the posts on here are a bit short sighted.

Imagine if your neighbours all put big bore exhausts on their cars and turned their stereos to full blast, then tried to claim that "the road was there before your house".

Its now x5 170s on nights. Im often doing that shift.Hope they have thicker ear muffs when we test the horns..

Can't really see the comparison though. As that would be a public noise nuisance. Many pubs will do the same with noise, and will only turn it down when they are threatened with losing the licence.

Why, i want to know, does she have a Holiday House at the bottom of her garden at Craigentinny anyway? is it that popular a tourist destination? Did she sell it on the basis that it'd be convenient for the Olympics?
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
!

Anyway, if they're complaining now, what must it have been like when they fired up loads of Valentas of a morning?

Well what a sensible post that was. I'm sure if you lived close by to the depot and had a young family you might think differently?

Indeed. I remember when WSMR started up and they started to get LOTS of complaints from the residents next to Marylebone about the noise and the smell of the engines as they used to leave them idling. They then started to shut them down due to the vast number of complaints.

I don't understand what people expect living near a depot. I live near the train cleaning sidings at Laira and I can hear the engines of hsts during the night, even more so in the summer when it's hot and the window is open. I live about 30 metres from the line and others are closer. Not one complaint in my area. We all knew what to expect.

It is odd but I guess people are just becoming more precious as time moves on. I know my family who are selling their house next to a rail line - east kent so all quiet electrics - and people turn their nose's up at it. Honestly you cant even tell they are passing and thats when your in the garden right next to it.

Chill out chap it was a joke. What would I have to gain from the above happening?

But if you want a serious and honest opinion then I really could not careless if these peoples lives are being ruined by the noise. It's an issue for the residents/council and East Coast to deal with. If I could wave a magic wand and sort it then I would, but as I have no control over it, I'll try not to lose any sleep over it;)

Yes I have a lot of sympathy, but there are far more deserving causes out there in the world to shed a tear for.

So why didn't they shut them down in the first place?

Cant remember exactly now but I think it was only the first one in in the morning that went out not so long after they just left it idling.

This reminds me of St Pancras, where early morning annoucements are banned due to the close proximity of people living in Somers Town.

On a windless summer night (so sleeping with the window open) I can hear horns from the sidings at Cambridge despite being half a kilometre away... it's surprising how far sound carries.

Still, it isn't anywhere near as annoying as the chavs with big echoing exhausts that can be heard whatever the weather at all times of year.
