Riverside pub southbank

Good morning,

I am arranging a small reunion of old colleagues and a couple suggested trying to find a riverside pub in the South Bank or City of London Area, we we can sit outside by the river and have drinks & lunch there. Does anyone out there know of any such venue. I have found some near the London Bridge and although they look good, I don't think they have outside seating as such.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

When are you going? Pubs I've been to and can recommend are the Horniman at Hays which is closed for refurbishment until March 24th. Also on the wrong side of the river I can recommend The Anchor which is just to the side of the bridge going over into Cannon St, the Founders Arms by Tate Modern, and a bit further along and set back from the river a bit the Mulberry Bush which is by Itv.

If riverside seating is an essential criteria, you're largely limited to Doggetts by Blackfriars, The Anchor or the pub (whose name I forget) which is right next to the Golden Hinde.

The Anchor is on the other side of the railway viaduct from the Golden Hinde, toward the Globe/Tate Modern, next to Lloyds Bank, Red Lion Court

+1 for the doggets suggestion. You can book tables right by the window too and its quite pleasant sat there eating watching the river traffic go by

I've spent many a happy hour on the benches outside the pub which lies to the immediate east of Blackfriars Bridge on the Southbank, whose name I forget. There is plenty of seating, but it does get very crowded in season and when the weather is clement. You can even get down on to the foreshore when the tide is low. The food's OK too, but expect a wait. It is female-friendly, unlike some. It lies between Blackfriars and Tate Modern and used to be a Young's pub, probably still is.

a nice pub right by the thames, has gas heaters on on cold days, you can watch trains, planes and river traffic.

Yeah its perfect. Most are along the south bank for a lazy weekend stroll. whatever the weather

That'll be the Old Thameside, many a decent pint can be had there, the outside seating is up on a decked area, pleasant in summer. Also second the recommendations for the Founders Arms, great pub.

Perhaps these are too far out but further east on the north bank there is the Prospect of Whitby and the Captain Kidd (both in Wapping). The Grapes further along Narrow St (Part owned by Sir Ian McKellen who lives just a few doors away I believe) only has a small terrace but great food (though you would have to book). On the south side at Rotherhithe there is the Mayflower (a nice old little pub but with limited seating on the deck - about 6 tables maybe?). Also at Rotherhithe there is the Old Salt Quay. The latter is a bit impersonal but it does fit the bill if you want a large outside seating area, there is also a lot of space inside should it rain.

Thanks, I have heard of those first three you mention and will really have to go and try them out on a mini pub crawl some time. I understand they are quite historic.

Did a mini pub crawl in the area last Summer - 3 of the 4 claim to be the oldest pub on the Thames if I recall. Think The Mayflower was my favourite followed by The Prospect but a tough call.
