Ryanair has applied for slots to operate Stansted to Edinburgh and Stansted to Aberdeen from summer 2022.
Flying on the LON-EDI route is already generally cheaper than the train, and this should bring the average fare down quite a bit making flying even more competitive.
Current competition to Edinburgh is BA from Heathrow and London City, and easyjet from Gatwick, Luton and Stansted. Of course back in the day there were several other airlines who have come and gone.
