Is this route still operating? A recent map showed that the Hamburg Malmö sleeper uses it and Google Maps still shows the tracks there.

No all freight trains stopped using this ferry back in 2014. It is only the Transdev Snalltaget passenger trains that still uses it now. However freight trains do still use the other ferry between Rostock (Germany) and Trelleborg (Sweden) currently.

In my eyes it was better to go take the ferry to Gedser, Danmark and from there a locomotive for the train. Trelleborg is quit a distance with a ferry.

So only 3 trains in each direction. Daily is Berlin -Hamburg - Copenhagen - Malmö. Depature is 20.38 and arrival at 7.26.

From Malmö 21.13 and with a change in Copenhagen to a bus arrival in Berlin 6.40.

Advance should be in the price.

3 trains each week, as it has been for some years.
The night trains Hamburg-Copenhagen and back run from Easter to mid September. I think they are an IC3 DMU (or a pair) like the day trains.

I made the mistake that that train departs from Rostock (Warnemunde) and not Sassnitz. Looking at the sea the distance is double from/to Sassniz than Warnemunde. From Berlin traintravel is 1 hour longer to Sassnitz than Warnemunde.

Sassnitz to Trelleborg seems slightly shorter than Rostock to Trelleborg which i imagine is why the passenger trains use the Sassnitz ferry and the freight trains use the Rostock ferry.

4 hours and 6 hours respectively. The Sassnitz route is also seasonal, and the number of ferries on the route was halved a few years back, which is why the night train sits around en route for hours.

I always believed that Sassnitz is solely for freight to Russia.
Historically that was Mukran, and the Trelleborg ships left from Sassnitz Haven (very steeply graded!). The terminal was moved to Mukran in the 1990s IIRC.
