Please can someone clarify for me the difference, or relationship, between Dellner and Scharfenberg couplers? I’ve tried to research this online and the best I can work out is that Scharfenberg are a type of coupler whereas Dellner is a company/brand which is a variation on the Scharfenberg - is that correct?
Thanks!

Pretty much. Scharfenberg is the type of coupler. Dellner is a company that manufactures a version of the Scharfenberg couplings under their own brand, as well as other things such as gangway connections. Wabtec also manufacture a version of the Scharfenberg coupling.

To complicate matters slightly Scharfenburg and Dellner have also been used to refer to two different types of coupler. Scharfenburg is associated with Type 10 and Dellner the Type 12.

The Type 10 is a larger coupler used mostly by higher sped trains e.g. Eurostar and I think Class 80x. Honourable mention as an exception goes to Class 332 and 333 which for a long time were the only Type 10 users apart from Eusrostar.

Type 12 is a more compact coupler which is more or less the standard coupler for uk trains nowadays.

Despite a move towards standardised couplers, there is very little electrical compatibility and (almost) none between trains of different manufacturers.

How we yearn for the days of 27-wire jumpers…

Scharfenberg is also a brand, now owned by Voith.
