Hi All,

I know this is similar to this [thread=36745]thread[/thread] posted by Dai, sorry.

But, I am working towards a GCSE equivalent award in PSHE.
I am researching how social networking sites have changed the way that people interact and communicate...

If you can spare 2-3 minutes to complete my survey which can be found HERE, I will be most greatful.

TIA

I think this has come in perfect timing with my thread! Smashing stuff, I've done your survey too!

Where are the options for those who don't use them?

It's an important question because if you ignore it it'd give the impression that everyone uses them, thus increasing their apparent importance.

Good Lord! There are really people out there young enough to be doing GCSEs?! Or 'O' Levels as I prefer to call them, mainly to annoy my own kids.

Err, but you'd practically have to be a member of a social networking site (you're using one to read this message) to know about his survey. Just put railukforums in the 'other' box.

Thanks for all the responses so far.

Thanks to 90019 for pointing that out - I may think up some questions and create a second survey.

This is a discussion forum, and I wouldn't count it as a social networking site as such.

There's an interesting topic. What does constitute a social networking site, as opposed to a forum? Is there a difference? I've never really thought about that one before, but could be interesting to find out what people think.

A social networking site is a way to interact with a friend and/or person online.

A forum or "bulletin board" is a way to interact with a large community of a specialised subject.

The main difference is that on sites such as Facebook, in general you know most of the people who you are friends with (apart from the people who add for no apparent reason), whereas with forums like this you generally never meet/know the person you are talking to (unless you attend one of the meets that is!).

Bad definition. Think of forums which are used within, say, universities!

No difference - the same activities (social interaction) are carried out on here as on Facebook etc. The software may look and act a little different but that's about it really.

I would disagree.

Social networking sites are more often used to catch up with existing friends, find out what's going on in their lives, organise events, view pictures, chat a bit... Nothing particularly serious. I've never had a proper debate on a social networking site (when I was registered on them), whereas I've been involved in plenty on here.

This site in particular does have profiles (although they're not used in the same way as social networking, the potential is there). But in general, a discussion forum is more about discussing a common interest; in the case of this forum, railways and transport. There is some chat and socialising, but on the whole the core purpose of the site is to provide rail enthusiasts and staff a place to discuss railways.

(Obviously these aren't hard and fast definitions, but that's why I wouldn't call this a "social networking" site as such).

It might be interesting to look into the differences between discussion forums and social networking sites, seeing as how we've got a bit of a debate going about it!

Granted forums tend to be more focussed but to me they all seem different sides of the same coin. For example if you put
Code:
define:social networking
into Google you get a lot of definitions, most of which apply to forums as well as the likes of Facebook. They're all basically places where people of similar interests get together for a chinwag and to keep in touch :)
