Scotrail On Train Conductor Role

I've been thinking about applying for this for a while. I have worked in call centre and administration roles for 14 years but fancy a change.

Just trying get to find out things such as the realistic chances of getting the role with my experience? I have noted this role pays a bit more than roles such as shift officers or ticket inspectors. Are these other roles seen as a stepping stone to the conductor job? Are they are more likely starting point? Keen to know what sort of experience they are looking for.

Also was wondering what the shifts are like to assess work family balance. I have 2 young sons. I have read that it's 2 days on and 2 days off alternating between earliest and lates Early being 5/6am tof mid afternoon a day lateso being mideveloped afternoon to 11/12 midniget.

Start times can vary depending on depot. Earliest start is around 4.30am and latest finish around 1am at my depot. Shift pattern is 4 earlies, 4 lates with a long weekend every third weekend (5 days off). Also have 13 booked sundays a year.
Pay is good once you add in commission for ticket sales and additional pay for Sundays. The shifts can be tough on family life but it's a good career move if you fancy something new.

As previously said, will depend on depot you are thinking of applying to with regards to shifts. My depot, earliest book on is 4:15 am. Latest book off is around 1am (01:30 on a Friday night/Sat morning). Shifts can be tough, especially with a young family although there are conductors currently in that situation who manage.

In terms of experiences they look for, a safety critical role would be advantageous. But certainly customer service skills will serve you well. If u have any experiences of dealing with any emergency situations and working to strict rules and procedures. Certainly ticket examiners, platform staff are good entry level roles, that you should then be able to progress.

Yeah that's how it tends to go. Will have a Sunday included every 4 weeks, so you end up working 7 in a row, also need 12 hours rest between shifts so can't be late into early shift
