That's all shacks between Markinch and Tweedbank now cleared, which is rather good going! I see I'm only 2 shack scores behind Noddy for 2016, game on! <D

Well this doesn't make some of you jealous...

Following the recent Tech's Bookwork Weekend, the first of several this year that will have a hashtag in use, I can finally share the count of my shack scores. It's taken a long time getting to this point, but here are the long-awaited figures:

Total shack scores: 2,130

Which was quite a lot more than I expected to be honest! "So you're nearly all done then Tech" I hear you all thinking. Well, not quite. As far as I can tell, the following breakdown is accurate:

Northern Ireland: 17
Irish Rail: 37 (not sure how I arrived at that number, I need to re-count on the next bookwork weekend to ensure accuracy!)
LUAS (Dublin Trams): 29
Isle of Man: 7

Back in the UK:

Light rail: 223
LU: 148
Preserved: 66

Therefore:

Mainline: 1,603

It's worth pointing out that places like Paddington, Victoria and more besides, LU and mainline shacks are counted as one station, and they belong in the mainline count. What I have yet to do is figure out how many shacks are left to visit, although I know full well that number is rather significant. I will of course be sharing that update too, although I expect to be creating a separate thread for that one. All to be dealt with on the next Tech's Bookwork Weekend, which is pencilled in for 29th and 30th May 2016.

The hashtag for all the updates, which I ended up sharing for an insight into how it all goes down, will continue to be #TechsBookworkWeekend although I may be working on 30th May yet. I'm sure I don't need to tell you all how much of an endurance task it will be to count my required shacks!

Done a quick tally.
Network Rail 698 (target for year is to reach 1000, but hitting too many diesel galas atm)
LU: 152
Other Light Rail: 171
Preserved: 110+ (did a quick tally in the shower before going out earlier this evening)

Overseas got me thinking. Do chairlifts/gondalbahnrn count?. You normally have to swap vehicles at midway shacks, so score them automatically enroute. And if funiculars count, the hotel I stayed at on Corfu in 1981 had one.

And if Kite159 is reading this, abseiling from Eigerwand to Eigergletscher is particularly discouraged when you're carrying a folding bike...:)

I don't think anyone's ever considered scoring chairlifts etc for shacks, until now! I certainly haven't and am not about to change that!

Certainly you're doing well with the non-mainline shacks, I expect now I'll be shack scratching on my next adventure!

I wouldn't be so sure... Kite's folding bike is a fearless machine and knows no limits! ;)

Very good scores Techni :)

For myself:
Network Rail - 1861/2557
LU - 339 (on my sheet) (out of 339)
Other Light Rail - 113/342

----------

That reminds me to dig out my little folding bike ready for Saturday :)

Not bad at all Kite, I knew you were doing better than me but surprised how I have more light rail shacks than you do!

Going by your counts I'm pleased to see that I have less than 1,000 mainline shacks to go now :D

I'll look forward to welcoming you to this club of at least 3 when you get them all. It's a bit lonely lol!

Seeing as though others have given some totals here are mine.

National Rail: 1060/2560
Underground: 285/318
Light Rail: 182/456
Preserved: 66/211

What's interesting is we all seem to have different totals of the number of shacks that there are.

We do need to have a definitive source of the totals, is there such an official count out there?

As expected, no-one ouf of the regular shack attackers (except Gathursty of course!) is beating Kite  Is no-one else counting Irish shacks? Obviously they're separate to my mainline counts, and actually I've realised I've not added to the summary all my New York trip shack scores, nor the ones from Stockholm. I might tot them up actually on the next Tech's Bookwork Weekend!

As far as I am aware:

Scotland: 356 stations - current up to the Borders Line stations.
Wales: 221 stations - current upto Pye Corner and Energlyn & Churchill Park
England: 1984 stations - current upto Apperley Bridge and Oxford Parkway

1984 + 221 + 356 = 2561 stations unless I have put the same pic in two folders which I will double check this weekend.

I echo Techniquest in that it would be good for an official register as it is a number you find out rather than count down lol!

I've just added those two welsh ones to my list making 2562 for me. I'll have to go through my list to see what appears to be there that possibly shouldn't.

I had originally taking my list from the NRE and there were underground stations and ferry ports in it which I took out! May have missed one somewhere.

6 May

Old Street
Essex Road
Drayton Park
Enfield Chase
Bowes Park
Palmers Green

8 May

Due to various disruptions that took place on the Great Eastern Railway network, I am listing both the intentional stations scored, plus the unintentional ones too.

Ingatestone (intentional - to pick up replacement bus to Colchester due to scheduled morning engineering works)
Colchester Main/Intercity/whatever locals call it (intentional - for onward journey to Norwich Thorpe and Berney Arms)
Clacton on Sea (unintentional - delay on replacement bus cased me to miss the 10:20 to NRW, so did this line as a filler move to bash some new track)
Great Yarmouth (unintentional - points failure at Reedham meant no trains via Berney Arms, which I was intending to score)
Chelmsford (unintentional - 15:00 from NRW terminated Colchester, change for onward service)
Witham (unintentional - replacement buses to Stansted Airport were trying to be sourced for onward journey to London)
Braintree Town (unintentional - filler move to bash more new track while queues for replacement bus dwindle)

Brockenhurst, Beaulieu Road, and Lymington Pier and possibly Lymington Town were all intentional but I never made it due to various disruptions on the GER metals.

9 May

Bexley
Lee
Albany Park
Mottingham
Sidcup
New Eltham
Belvedere
Erith

Sidcup Loop Line completed.

Alsager

18 May

Inverkip
Whinhill
IBM Halt
Branchton
Drumfrochar
Greenock West

A spin locally as it was a pleasant day. I have completed all of the stations in PA1 - 19 postcode area south of the mighty Clyde except Lochwinnoch and Howwood.
