With a discussion here about the current situation around coach lettering on Pendolinos, should they be rationalised to fit with the swap of coach G from first to standard?

Once the refurbishment is complete, yes, assuming the software doesn't make it too difficult. Having U in the middle, much as U for Unreserved has some value, just confuses people as they expect letters in sequence. Unreserved coaches could be indicated by way of stickers on the door window.

Unreserved coaches are announced before the train arrives, using actual stickers would make it much more difficult to manage, especially if they want to change in future.

See, this is why they shouldn't have extended the Pendos - it just confuses the General Public... <D

They should use the same lettering sequence as GWR on the 9 car 800s

I would say no, as long as each coach is properly identified both inside and out, because it would cost money, and would surely cause even more confusion during the inevitable period when some sets had been relettered and others had not. Those with seat reservations should be able to find their coach easily enough, and those without should just be advised which the non-reserved vehicles are.

It's always C, F, G and U in an 11 car, or just C and G in a 9, whether refurbished or not (though G of course is 1st on a pre-refurb 11 and Standard or missing on other sets).

using actual stickers would make it much more difficult to manage, especially if they want to change in future.

Not hard to peel stickers off and put them elsewhere, but the other option would be to display it on the door display.

Agreed, it's not worth the hassle, cost or confusion

Agreed

Agreed, and quite simple and straightforward to do

It's worth noting that Avanti's Voyagers have been re-lettered - the letters were reversed at some point in the past though I couldn't say when. A used to be 1st, it's now E. XC have kept the original lettering.

Does it matter? FWIW every time I've travelled on a pendo passengers have just piled on wherever (and seat themselves regardless of if the displays show reserved :D)

A better idea might be to reduce the absurd amount of 1st class. 2 First, 1 Standard Premium, 6/8 Standard. (this won't happen, but it is speculative discussion after all...)
