I suggest that the existing and proposed high speed (HS) lines be renamed. Does anyone agree with me and does anyone have any suggestions ?

My reasoning is that the high speed aspect of hs2 seems to be like a magnet for critics of the line who believe that the purpose of the line is to save time only.

My thoughts were along the lines of HC for high capacity. or NS for north south line.

Probably not what you are after, but for years I have rather cheekily referred to HS1 as the "LGV Angleterre"

And why the need to rename HS1?

Not having a go at you personally, but it's just typical of the British attitude. If we have something to be truly proud of, people just want to bash it. We plan to build a high speed line to transform train travel on the core part of the network, and people say it's not needed or we should change the name from high "speed" which is a proud statement to high "capacity". We win the right to host the Olympics, people moan saying it's a waste of money. I'm glad we didn't get the 2018 World Cup because we'd have heard people moaning about the cost for the next seven years.

we shouldn't have to but calling it high speed seems to provide critics with a stick with which to beat it ! i just wondered if we could have a better name that encompassed all the positive aspects this line can be provide. It should be something to be proud of - we just like being negative in this country !!!

How about 'White Elephant' for HS2?
That title has already been bestowed on far worse use of money in London, such as the national stadium (built in the wrong place) and the Millenium Dome. Come 2012 there will be a herd of 'white elephants' once the Olympics are over, as governments seem incapable of rational decisions when it comes to London.

Obviously, with your suggestion you are not a supporter of HS2 being built. It would doubtless be so much easier to keep our railways in the dark ages come 2020 and you doubtless have far better suggestions for helping ease the capacity shortage our exisiting network will have by such a time. After all, if a network of very high speed routes would work in a small country you'd think the technologically minded people of Japan would have built one by now..............

It's not that I'm not a supporter, quite the opposite, I just think that there are bigger priorities right now.

Why not sell naming rights to the highest bidder?
Might offset some of the cost

In my opinion there is no need whatsoever to rename HS2 because the higher speed aspect of the new line should not be neglected and should be its selling point. Yes it will provide much needed capacity but the major selling point of the line has to be the improved journey speeds between points rather than the extra capacity it will provide.

I've felt for a while the "HS" monicker has detracted from the main reason for building the line and provided ammunition for people how say "why carve up the countryside for 30 minutes saved".

Only suggestions I have for a rename would be, to borrow an electronics marketing blurb for some futuristic, next generation thingie, would be "HX" i.e. HX2. X could also stand for Speed or Capacity depending on your preference!

"Why carve up the countryside for 30 minutes saved".

They should really get going at the Scottish end too - it would ruin the "30 minutes saved" protests from the Bucks half-wits.

Has Transport Scotland made any decisions yet on the route North of the Border?

But back to the original Question.

HS1 - The Queen Elizabeth II Line
HS2 - The Union Line (Or The Kingdom Line)
HS3 - The Principality Line

Surely they should name responding to their geographical locations/directions like in France.

HS1 = HS Europe

ICE 1, ICE 2, ICE 3 (intercity express)

Then change existing pendos to be the IC line (intercity)
and the slow LM & freight lines to be C Line (commute/city)

All very german, but makes sense to me, the germans will be running all trains in the UK before HS2 is built so we may as well given them a similar framework to operate in :D

The whole idea of HS2 is to get it to Scotland eventually. After the first section is built, I assume the plan would be to create the North West/North East Y north of Brum with one going to Manchester and one going to Leeds.

There'd be nothing stopping Scotland from working South from Glasgow towards Manchester & from Edinburgh towards Leeds (if that is the routes chosen) whilst the English section goes North from Euston via Brum. It would certainly cut down on the build time if both "ends" were worked on at the same time

What about naming it a section of the WCML and rename the existing WCML between Birmingham and London the Central England Mainline or something like that seeing as the 'classic compatible' trains would run through anyway..

Of course another multi-billion pound project with the WCML name attached would probably not be too popular either...

How about HS1 being called "The South Eastern & Chatham Railway" and HS2 could be called by the same name of the old company that served both, the "London & North Western Railway" or the "Midland Railway". Bringing back the names of when we had real railway companies.

I think a lasting appropiate name should be earned not given, for example the Javelins earned their name from the service they were built to operate, it wasnt given by the builder.

Of course the whole idea of HS2 is that it opens up the West Midlands as cheap affordable housing for the working class. Watch jobs drain away from Birmingham as it becomes a suburb to the South East. ;)

I love the way that HS2 is attacked both for charging £250 single fare *and* for being so cheap it'll lead to tens of thousands of commuters using it each day

Presumably it'll also be criticised for being too fast and too slow at the same time?
