All the rumours about possible redeployment of Nova 3s due to the noise of 68s at stabling points begs the question of where would happily accept them from the noise viewpoint? Shunting them elsewhere doesn't solve it and standing in Cleethorpes, Piccadilly or the Airport can't be any better than at Scarborough for that.

Is there alternative, effective and quieter traction available to pair with the coaches? I suspect not.

Somewhere far away from where people live. I think it's finally been realised that this is the only option!

Class 88s would be the obvious choice. But that requires electrification, which the government has been very reticent to authorise.

1. That is the option adopted on the canals..........then someone builds new housing alongside the new moorings!

2. Electrification, great! Then they could use 92s! oops.

Couldn't a depot be established at Gascoigne wood ? Lots of siding space, not far off route and in the middle of nowhere.

At risk of asking a silly question why do the engines have to be kept running when stabled? If it's purely to provide hotel power to the Mk5s, can't a shore supply be installed at the stabling points?

This is the right answer - shore supply to power the coaches & preheat the engine/run the compressors if they're electric.

It could be. But it would be quite a taxi ride for the traincrew.

Still, GW isn't far off the mark!

The UK certainly needs to make more use of shore supplies so diesel engines are running for the absolute minimum time possible.

And to think that 20+ years ago 67 hauled mail trains were running off shore supply at Willesden PRDC because of the noise the locos made

Class 88s would be the obvious choice. But that requires electrification, which the government has been very reticent to authorise.

With the amount of suggestions for the use of 88s I'm inclined to wonder if there are more than the DRS 10 hiding somewhere in the UK

Could solve the TPE Class 68 noise problem by sending them to ScotRail to fill in the diagrams still covered by ****y 170s on the Inter7City routes! :E

Just plate over all the radiator grilles, shirley?! That'll cut the noise down! :E

Just pay for double glazing for whoever is whinging about it. At around 3-5k per side of house it has to be simpler and cheaper than messing with the trains.

That said, if it was to be tendered the way most railway projects are it would be £60k per property, plus whatever it costs for the various environmental reports.

Double glazing would not make sufficient difference.
