I would love to photo what I believe is the reciprocal working on the UP Test Valley, which crosses over to the DOWN Test Valley just before Redbridge Junction at singmal 862 then runs wrong line into the reception sidings.

Yesterday about 15.40 I saw a Ford transit carrying train heading north for Laverstock South Junction past Tesco's Salisbury with both car carriers and open wagons. Not seen that before.

Some nice photos there Rich, Test lane crossing is quite good for services towards Romsey.

That's 6M58 Southampton Western Docks to Bescot which runs top & tail into the down goods loop (front loco uncouples, runs into the bay at Southampton Central) back loco then takes the service forward via Redbridge, Romsey and onto Basingstoke then forward to Bescot, seems longwinded but there must be a reason for it.

As far as I know there is no such working booked - 4M50 is the only Freightliner to run that route. Of course this Saturday all Freightliners will run that route as Basingstoke is closed. The Test Valley line only sees 6 freights a day - 4M50, the out and back Chichester stone (in is about 5am - out about 1pm), the out and back Westbury - Eastleigh engineers, and 6M58 car train. Which is why I find any freight running on that line is something unusual IMHO.

EDIT: For anyone out for the Basingstoke diversions who doesn't really know the area there are some shots http://www.southernrailwaypics.co.uk/2007/ColourfulSnakeTrains11thApril/index.html from the last diversions.

You're right sorry!

Trains from Romsey via 579 crossover into MCT were (2005):

4B32 MO Marchwood FLT, arr 1022
4B34 MO Marchwood FLT, arr 1212
4B38 MO Fawley Esso, arr 1329

all via Totton Down Line although 6V38 has also run wrong line on the Down Main reversible:

I am sure, from observation, that the MO FL flats becomes TO after Bank Holidays.

And then the:
0V36 SX Westbury Down Yard, arr 1311 used to run Up Test Valley, then via 579 crossover to the Down TV and then Redbridge Junction. This is one of the shots I have been trying to get for ages!

Excellent pix if I may add!

http://www.southernrailwaypics.co.uk/2007/SouthernDayOut29thMay/img_3981.html

caught my eye: I was trying to work out what was going on on the left (Northam Up Yard?). Please excuse my ignorance! It looked as though there was an empty freight going from the Up Main into the Yard loop.

It was an EWS intermodel heading north after being looped: http://www.southernrailwaypics.co.uk/2007/SouthernDayOut29thMay/img_3980.html The loco is just visible in the background of the Freightliner shot.
