Just yesterday on the underground I noticed someone struggling at the gate line with their phone.
Seems it's not common knowledge where in the phone the NFC antenna is, and if you move the phone too fast, it'll tell you to move the phone away and back again. If you do it too quickly the phone won't respond.
I think it's probably a designed in feature so you don't accidentally pay twice or tap twice. But this cooldown period left someone rather frustrated.
