We want to travel outward from St Pancras to Canterbury (either station is fine) today (Sunday) mid-afternoon. We want to travel back from Whitstable tomorrow (Bank Hol Monday) mid-afternoon. We'll have bikes with us.
We want to buy tickets for two adults and two children. We have a Family & Friends Railcard. We want flexible tickets. We would be grateful for a recommendation of what ticket(s) would be best for this journey. Thanks.

An Weekender ticket from London Terminals to Ramsgate, route "Plus High Speed", would cover both journeys. This would cost £34.25 for each adult and then you'd buy a Kids for a Quid flat fare for £1 for each child.

You could also buy the slightly cheaper "Not via Ashford" (also described as requiring travel via Herne Bay) Weekender fare at £29.20, and then obtain a change of route excess for the outward portion to allow you to get to Canterbury via Ashford (rather than having to change at Faversham).

This excess would cost half the difference between the two fares, and could be obtained from any ticket office prior to travel, or alternatively also onboard the train. However, given the very small saving and fact that you can't obtain it online, you may prefer to just buy the "Plus High Speed" fare in the first place.
