Basically the previous remodelling was to make the Guide Bridge line the faster/main route. The very recent remodelling was to once again make the Ashton/Victoria line the faster/main route as it was previously.

In some way we are lucky Stalybridge was not wired to the previous layout.
The earlier remodelling/resignalling (optimised towards Piccadilly) was in 2010 I think.
TP electrification was approved in the 2012 HLOS, but only to wire existing layouts.
Before much had been done other than some bridge-raising, the project was canned.
Victoria-Stalybridge then became "Phase 5" of the NW electrification project, but that in turn was de-scoped to just east of Victoria, the present limit of live wires.
TP electrification was then resumed as a major route upgrade, which included re-modelling Stalybridge to improve the line speed towards Victoria, also a major upgrade of the Staley-Miles Platting route.
Apart from the cost of doing it twice, we might just have got the best electrified layout as a result.
It was also important to get the area resignalled, and I suspect the recent work was simpler as a result.
