O, wow!

Network Rail have applied for planning permission for a pub at Carlisle.

It looks amazing. Mezzanine level, outside drinking space, platform seating. I cannot wait!

Imagine if that was Wetherspoon. Carlisle would have three branches within ten minutes' walk from each other!

No-one has mentioned the Jubilee Refreshment Rooms at Sowerby Bridge, which I often visited (assuming it's still open).
Apparently it's reopened but as a cafe rather than as a pub.

In fairness, it was always a cafe as well as a pub from the day it opened more than ten years ago. They served teas, coffees and bacon butties to commuters from early in the morning - and for a while had a trolley on the Down (Leeds-bound) platform in the morning peak - before becoming a pub (but still serving tea, coffee and cake) later in the day. It closed during lockdown, then reopened as a morning takeaway cafe only for a few months before closing again. As far as I'm aware - unless there have been new developments since I transferred to Italy three weeks ago - it is still closed....and likely to remain so for the forseeable future. Luckily there are several other excellent pubs in Sowerby Bridge within a 5-10 minute walk from the station.

Looks like All Bar One could be moving into the large empty unit above M&S at Glasgow Central. Was going to be Wetherspoons at one time a few years back. If it had happened JDW would have no less than six outlets within a 10min or less walk.

Biggest station on the network without a pub? Exeter St David’s must be up there

Coventry's not a bad shout on that front either, although there's a new hotel that opened earlier this year across the square that does have a bar now.

Wow! Avanti have submitted a planning application to refurbish the pub at Crewe!!! I hope it’s as good as the Lancaster pub. That’s is my favourite pub and my favourite station with my favourite staff.
For it to be any good they need to boot out the current operator and get a local pub/brewing company to run it! You can refurbish something all you like. If the end result is the continued sale of cooking lagers and smooth flow you may as well open a toilet!

The pub at Lancaster is a nice one mind - well worth a pint of anyone's time
Imagine if that was Wetherspoon.
Imagine there's no Spooooooons
It's easy if you try

Good Lord it’s what gets me out and about more than anything from Wick to Penzance and across the Irish Sea :p

Me too! Always interesting visiting new places to get a winner Spoons in.
I would rather stick pins in my eyes. Horrible places. I despise the Brexit balloon of an owner and he won't have a penny of my money.

Personally I like to find a decent local pub with good beer and good company. I have never gone somewhere in the country and failed to find a better pub than a spoons. Each to their own though

Ps happy to be a beet snob!

Some places you’d love to return to, whilst others shall we say the less said about the better. Prime example was Glasgow last week. Those required around Wishaw and Rutherglen left me feeling rather uneasy whilst Largs and Renfrew were a joy to visit. It’s what makes it all the more interesting.

I'm sure there's something about their beer pythons. Every wWetherspoons I've ever been in serves the cask ale consistently far to cold.

Though I enjoy popping into The Three Guineas on Reading station, they ruined it by moving the bar to the area where seating previously allowed viewing of the trains.

when I used to go in a Spoons I found the ale quality variable. If you got a manager with pub experience the ale was decent. If not they treated everything like super chilled cooking lager

if you are at a station pub you have to be able to see the trains surely!

You would think so. If it was always like that I’d understand but somebody decided to deny us of any railway views around a decade or so ago.

The fashion nowadays is to be able to see the ale barrels whilst at a station pub.
