Surprised no-ones mentioned Manchester Piccadilly yet - there are 2 bars in the station, (The Balcony Bar and the Sports Bar) nothing special but comfortable enough, and beats sitting down on the Concourse. There is also the Bulls Head very nearby on Fairfield Street, that does a good ale or two. Not sampled any of the food at any of them though. There is a pretty decent pub literally underneath Manchester Oxford Road - The Thirsty Scholar - back in the days of the 23.32 departure from Oxford Rd to Crewe, was a very nice way to spend an evening. You can hear the trains thundering over the viaduct literally above you.

Ahhh Stalybridge Buffet, spent the new millenium in there, well I actually spent it throwing up at home, but I'd spent a brilliant afternoon in there and various other establishments in Stalyvegas....just overdid it a bit:oops:.The Prince of WAles opposite Foxfield station is an absolute must if on that line and The Queens Arms (Top house) at Patricroft is reputedly the oldest railway pub in country, serves a great pint of Boddies (Actually brewed by Hydes).

That'll be the cask version and not the other ****e you get in the cans. It was my preferred 1st pint at Stalybridge to go along with the pie and peas, but the last time they didn't have it on.

Whilst waiting between trains late one evening last week, Old Timer decided to stop for a quick pint, to slake his thirst.

£3.70 for a pint of Miller Lite at the Bridge bar on New St station. If I knew who to complain to then I certainly would. This is seriously taking the mickey, bearing in mind one can go outside and pay half that price !

Grrrrrrrrrrr <(<(<(<(<(

If the station pub is run by SSP, one of those free Bite cards will get you 20% off. I think this applies to alcoholic drinks too. Useful to know (especially as it seems SSP have jacked up all prices by 20-25%!).

The Head of Steam at Huddersfield has already been mentioned, but also at Huddersfield station is the King's Head and just the other side of St Georges square (beware of the fountains coming up from under the pavement as you walk across!) the Cherry Tree is worth a visit. It's a Wetherspoons but in my opinion is the best wetherspoons. all 10 pumps are usually on all the time without the stupid 'coming soon' flags.
Also at Huddersfield, the station buffet between platforms 4 and 8 does very nice Sausage and bacon sandwiches. I get one every day on my way to uni!

Also recommended is the refreshement room at Carnforth, which has been cosmetically restored to how it appears in Brief Encounter.

Never tried that, will do next time to see if it's valid. I know that some Pumpkin shops sell cans of beer, but at that price even 20% will not make me buy any.

I actually went to Sheffield on the 15th and didn't see it! I have spent a few good hours in their other pub in York, and if its half as good it will be fantastic.

I believe it only opened on the 17th or 18th, not sure of the exact date! At one point you could access it from the platform but it seems that EMT have put a stop to this :(.

G'day all

Pembroke Dock has a nice pub at the station in the old station buildings, with real ales and reasonably priced meals.

In and out on the same train = 3 pints
In then out on the next train = 2hrs 40mins enough time for a feed and plenty of pints.

Cheers

I know it covers quite a few places alread mentioned in this thread, but this link for the 'Trans Pennine Pub Crawl' may be of interest to a few:
http://www.variousstuff.co.uk/pubs/tp pub crawl.htm

I will be sampling a few of these places this weekend, starting off with breakfast in the West Riding Refreshment Rooms - I will report back on how I get on!

Didn't realise they do breakfast at Dewsbury, but went in in July and had one of the best pork Sunday lunches I've ever had.

Just before Christmas last year, a cafe opened in the former staff messroom at Romsey station. It's just a kiosk serving bacon rolls and the like but it's independently owned, so if you want to support a local business I suggest you buy a bacon roll from them ;)

Breakfast is served 10-4 on Saturdays. We arrived about 11, by 11.30 the place was packed and I doubt we would've got a table for breakfast. The basic breakfast is £4.50, an extra £1.80 if you want a pint with it. They are flexibe with the breakfasts too - I was able to replace the egg on mine with hash browns.

With regard to the rest of the trail which I linked to earlier, th directions to the 2 pubs at Slaithwaite were a bit out - I think the writer must've had a few pints by then and forgotten exactly where the places were!

Thanks for that, if I'm on the line I usually go for breakfast at Huddersfield buffet, good value and lots of possible journeys to make.

Did you go to the bar at Marsden? What's it like, I've never been before so might have a trip out one day

We did the Riverhead at Marsden (less than 5 mins down the hill) rather than the Railway right outside the station - I've done the Railway before and it's ok, but the Riverhead has a greater selection of beers.

Right, I'll keep that in mind for when I go. Quite fancy a walk along the canal somewhere one day, just to have a look around. Seems like a nice place when going past on the train.

The Riverhead is great. Our last Day Rover pub crawl was hijacked by this place, because we went too early in the day, and it was so good it took hours to get everyone out! Hardly the point of getting a Day Rover. The fish and chip shop just up Peel Street on the left is also very good.

Sounds good. Thinking of going somewhere this Sunday for lunch, any idea where the best place for one is on the line? Dewsbury was good, although I'm hoping to try somewhere new.

Must agree it's got a cracking selection of ales. Last time i visited it was a summers eve & we sat outside on the wall over the wear. Didnt they film 'Where the heart is' in the pub & around Marsden?

Don't know about whether they used the pub, but the show was filmed in and around nearby Slaithwaite.

Just outside the Black Country
Codsall station buildings ('The Station') - Holdens establishment, and hourly trains to Wolverhampton/Birmingham/Shrewsbury until quite late for getting away as well.

Excellent booze and some pretty good railwayana as well.

http://paulbigland.fotopic.net/p7292245.html some nice representative shots from Snapper there!

Not a million miles away from me either rofl (walk in the single figures minutes wise).

Must try out Codsall, good one to tie in with doing WSMR. Even recognise a couple of the dodgy characters in that picture! ;)

Further to the info about Marsden, went to the Riverhead last Sunday and had a bloody good meal and a few pints. Then a walk along to Slaithwaite and the train back. A very good day out indeed.
