I was passed a report by a relative of a 4-6-0 steam loco on a low loader with an escort occupying a lane and a half at the M40 J2 just now (15.30 Wed 8 Feb). Seen heading off down the A355 in the direction of Slough - so on the 100yards between the M40 J2 roundabout and Beaconsfield services.

Think it was described as a GWR with a 4 digit number and with a tender.

So my guess is it was going into M40 Beaconsfield Services to park up for a rest/crew/hours break and possibly avoid the evening rush hour.

Knowing the area, I can see no reason for it to be going on the A355 between Beaconsfield and Slough as a big load for the road and no site of suitable interest on the road. If you wanted to go to the M4 then the easiest route would be M40 to London, M25 south then M4 west.

Any offers as to what moving to where?

Are you sure it was a 4-6-0? 4270 is being transported from the GWSR to Margate today, so may be in the area you've described. But that's a 2-8-0, not a 4-6-0. Here's a picture of it just after being loaded onto the low loader this morning, taken from the GWSR Facebook page.

That would fit.

My informant has seen the picture and thinks so.

I can see why it was described as a 4-6-0 as the first driving axle 'hides' behind the cylinder

Thanks.

But the tender?

What is it going to do in Margate?
