A couple of years ago Network Rail had plans to terminate pasengers services along the Stockport to Stalybridge line along with Reddish South and Denton but keeping the line open to freight and diversions.

At the time the local MPs and GMPTE had a campaign to "save our stations" which successfully stopped the proposed closures.

At the time GMPTE mentioned they wanted to run a regular Stockport to Manchester Victoria service via Reddish South and Denton although it never materialised and the service along the line has remained a single train each week.

With the expiry of the Northern Rail franchise next year and the Northern Hub project well underway are there any new proposals for the line in the future or is it likely to remain as it is?

Sorry but in these times why are we paying to subsidise a service which runs once a week or for a handfull of passengers (think Teeside Airport) We either need to improve the service or withdraw it BUT the Dept of Transport put their heads in the sand and forget it. I realise that this might upset some people but lets consider the real world. Put on a proper service or withdraw. The other service is Newcastle to Chathill, this must be an expensive service to operate and subsidise the easy way would be to stop running the current Northern service north of Morpeth and stop a Cross Country service to compensate at stations Morpeth to Chathill = easy solution

Its cheaper to run these services than close the stations as any attempt to close any station will be met with local councils saying that Northern Rail are missing the stations potential and there would be more objections to the station closing than the number of passengers the station each year.

This is what the local MP Andrew Gwynne said when there were plans to close Reddish South and Denton.

I agree with you though some of these once a week stations should really be closed.

With Chathill though I don't think the platforms are long enough to accommodate a CrossCountry voyager.
