Byelaw prosecution!!

Seriously possibly a telling off, then nothing. What can you do?

I suppose you waited until the TM announces that anybody boarding at Stevenage would have to buy a ticket from Edinburgh to London, you could rightly say that you already had one, i.e. the ALR.

That assuming the TM bothers checking tickets after Stevenage

The last three Virgin East Coast departures are set down only for part of the journey (2200, 2257 & 2330). I needed to use one for Darlington to Newcastle, after a late running Ken Dodd show. No problem despite worry that I would be prevented and spend the night on Darlington station. I suppose I might have been charged for York to Newcastle.

It is - you started short - whether you should have or not is another matter - but if you had a valid ticket they can't do anything.

I still fail to see how any prosecution could succeed in these set down situations. It's a nice threat to encourage people to behave, but I really don't see how you could take it further. You have paid the fare due for the journey you have made. You haven't journeyed from Edinburgh or York.

Perhaps they don't need to take it any further, as you allude to the mere threat is enough to stop the vast majority form chancing their arm and therefore has the desired outcome.

GWR often announce before Paddington departure that "the first stop is Westbury/Taunton/Exeter" (delete as appropriate) so anyone for Reading is taking a chance. Occasionally (very occasionally) they have missed out Reading if the train is already heaving leaving Paddington, not much anyone who chanced their luck for Reading can do but go to next stop and come back! They don't need to do it very often for word to get round the regulars. The threat is indeed enough to stop them trying.Regardless of any additional ticket purchase, the sheer journey time alone is simply not worth the risk. The announcements are clear enough, the next stop is not Reading!

Could someone confirm what the position is if you have a through ticket and are breaking your journey? For example if you had a ticket from Waterloo to Woking which stopped at Clapham Junction on a pick-up only basis then you would be able to board the train with the ticket, and you would be allowed to exit the station at Clapham Junction. What is the legal position here?

The barrier staff would have no idea what train you alighted at Clapham Junction from, for all they know you could have boarded at Victoria and are simply changing trains with a break in the journey to visit the local shops
