Possibly but I don't know for certain.
Turbos haven't been down to Swindon for years.

thinking logically, it has to be a turbo. presumably there was an HST that didnt arrive at Paddington. and the only trains they would have spare at Paddington would be turbos. The only other 3 car trains FGW has are 158s, and they never go to that area.

I suppose 158s either aren't cleared to Paddington, or no drivers have the combined route/traction knowledge?

I seem to recall 158s doing occasional west country to Paddington runs when they were first introduced. This did not last long though. Thames Trains never had any 158s, they were all with Wessex, so theyve simply never been used in the Thames Valley/Paddington area since. I assume they could be used if they had to be, but they generally dont even go near there, being used mainly for Cardiff -Portsmouth now.

Didn't the class 158's run a service from Paddington - Bristol via Hereford for a bit or was it Paddington - Bassingstoke - Bristol.

i might be totally wrong just think i remember hearing about that somewhere.

There used to be a daily cardiff?-pad service formed of a 158 that ran until the late 90's run by wessex or might have been x country?? seem to remember seeing it early morning late evening.

There was a fire on the A40 this morning as it crosses the GWML at Acton, some debris fell onto the track and all lines were shut early morning, might have something to do with the move this morning. caused us enough chaos 1st thing with units blocked in the depot.

I once travelled on a 159 from Basingstoke direct to Paddington. This was in the early 1990s, a bomb scare had shut the SW main line at Brookwood, so nothing was running beyond Farnborough. The train I got was a scheduled Salisbury to Waterloo, but was diverted at Basingstoke to travel into Paddington. We stopped at Reading as well- I presume this would have been to pick up a route conductor rather than passengers- then travelled up the relief line into Paddington. I remember the announcement on arrival as well "we apologise for your arrival at London Paddington this morning"

Incidentally, with reference to the thread over in the "rolling stock" forum, the 159 did have "Paddington" on its destination screen as well :)

Wonder if this would happen in today's privatised world....

Thames regularly hired a CT 158 for a time around 2002ish which worked Oxford - didcot bristols. The unit worked ECS from Tysley in the morning then returned to Tysley in the evening. 158s definatly haven't worked into paddington for years, not sure if they are even cleared now - will have to check the sectional appendix. FGW do occaisionaly send turbos down to swindon although it has been a while since one has worked that I am aware of. FGWs 8 158 3 car sets (158/95x) are usually found on cardiff pompy runs - they need it! Although even these can be miss-formed to 2car sets when required....

Could be worse I suppose .....

Thankfully the closest a pacer has got to Paddington is Swindon (so far) while filling in for an absent HST.

From what I can work out 158/9s are still cleared for Paddington. However, as they are not ATP fitted this would limit any working as this is now necessary for units working into the area. This was one of the resons for VT pulling out as they would have had to have fitted atp to their trains to continue to serve it.

143s in pad - would they make it:grin:! Same reasons I expect as they are not allowed towards brum in service from worcester/ashchurch areas!

AFAIK, nothing is stopping the 143s from going to Great Malvern, although I feel sorry for anyone who has to put up with them that far north!
