Here is some info for UK railfans.
Woy Woy to Hornsby:
This is a section of the "Central Coast Line". The line covers the 100 miles from Sydney to the major industrial and Port city of Newcastle. Local railfans usually refer to it as "the short north". The long tunnel is Woy Woy Tunnel at 1 mile. From Hawkesbury River station there is a 5 mile climb at 1in30 to1in40 as far as Cowan. This is always punishing on trains and failures by freight trains continues to be far too frequent. The train featured appears to be the 7.39am departure commencing from Gosford. On the approach to Hornsby the train was crossed from the UP Main to the UP Loop. This leads directly into platform 1 and onto the North Shore line and avoids conflicting movements. The train continues to the city via the Harbour Bridge and city underground. The trainset is an 8 car H set. Mid journey our version of an HST set was passed. This was train NT33 Sydney to Casino with road connections to the Northern Rivers district, Gold Coast and Brisbane. The full run to Brisbane has always been a favourite of mine. It will arrive in Casino about 6.00pm.
South Coast:
This is from Kiama to Bomaderry. This is the station for the regional city of Nowra which is on the opposite bank of the Shoalhaven River. Kiama is 74 miles from Sydney and the end of the electrified line. The final 25 miles is served by 2car DMU sets. The high mounted yellow triangles are permanent distant signals.
Mt Victoria to Springwood:
This covers the high section of the Blue Mountains. The train is an 8 car V set which is too long for many of the platforms. At these it stops at the 8v stop boards. The service is the 6.45am departure from Mt Victoria and the video commences from one of the storage and reversal sidings at Mt Victoria. Mt Victoria is 3424ft above sea level. The station platforms once had large refreshment rooms and both platforms. The first floor on the down platform once provided accommodation. This are is now a museum. The video does not identify the stations. Here they are in order:
Mt Victoria, Blackheath, Medlow Bath, Katoomba, Leura, Wentworth Falls. Bullaburra, Lawson, Hazelbrook, Woodford, Linden, Faulconbridge, Springwood.
At Medlow Bath a large white building is visible on the right of the screen. This is the Hydro Majestic Hotel. It is perched on the edge of the cliff with spectacular views over the Megalong Valley.
The line is fairly level to Katoomba and then is 1in30 descending all the way to Springwood. Driving skills are always very important on these services.
