Hi is anyone able to advise how talent pools work. I've recently passed recruitment process and now been placed in a talent pool. When a course becomes available do they offer to those who have been in longest or whose who scored highest during the recruitment process?

Talent pools are always a bit of a mystery on how they work once you are in them. Sometimes TOCs run new recruitment campaigns whilst the pool is just sitting there; I'm not sure they are managed overall that well.

Ones I am aware of generally go for people who have scored highest, but for a range of driver recruitment it might be the reverse. There's no hard and fast rule and it will be fairly difficult to find out unfortunately. My advice would be periodic (every 6 months or so) emails to check progress / confirm up-to-date information.

Hi all,

I would love to know how this works too.

I was told I was in a talent pool for a role I applied for in March this year - I passed a mechanical comprehension test, reached interview stage and then was told they’re not interview slots available.

Recently I saw a similar role, so went for it. I was told to resit the test, which I thought was unusual as it was the exact same test I sat and passed three months ago. I raised this with HR, but I was told the tests were different. They’ve now said they can’t progress my application as I failed the test — and that I can’t reapply for 6months. This is particularly painful as I have seen a role I would’ve loved to go for.

Ideally, I think I should have been progressed to interview stage directly as it was for a similar role at a different depot, with the same train company. I have a test I passed on their system and this should’ve been enough merit to allow me to interview for the role.

I have requested my results for both tests; the one I passed and the one I apparently failed.

Would love to know some thoughts of there is any guidance on this.

Did you have the interview then? You won't be in a talent pool until you've passed ALL stages normally including interviews.
If the role you applied for isn't the same then the criteria may well have been different, unfortunately if they wanted you to resit them that is up to them.
Its a shame you failed but just wait the 6 month's and go again.

Talent pools vary and be very careful about pinning your hopes on gaining a role through a talent pool.

Many people will tell you that they are in a talent pool for a particular role and then that TOC puts out another advert for the same role. It doesn't seem fair but its just the way its done on the railway.

However I do know people that have waited in talent pools from anything from 6 months to 3 years and then being contacted about a role.

I believe the interview would be more where they distinguish who they select rather than the assessment. Management at my depot have said they do not have access to the scores for the assessment however they are the ones doing the interviews and ultimately selecting the candidates.

DMI. MMI is a part of the assessment. DMI is done by a manager. Majority of the time this would be the line manager you would have.
Thank you for confirming. I guess just sit back and wait for a call hopefully in the not to distant future
