Met up with a few pals in Tamworth on Wednesday for a few beers*
We got off the train from Crewe just before 4pm and made our way towards the exit of the station which is positioned in the middle of platform 1, the exit which contains the booking office was all locked up and a small A4 notice advised passengers to use the car park exit further up the platform. This particular exit has no signage and is only about 4-5 feet wide, resulting in a queue to leave the station and then walk through a puddle of rain water to go towards the taxi rank and town centre.
On our return a few hours later we had to use this entrance, on arrival in the station there are no PID departure boards visible, apart for the next departures from platform 1. The list of all live departures from the other platforms are hidden in the closed off entrance/booking office area.
Tamworth is really a grotty station, it is quite a significant interchange station and the platforms with very limited shelter from the elements feel very narrow, especially when a non stop passenger or freight train whizzes past.
I can understand the actual booking office being closed, but surely there is no reason why the booking hall and main entrance can’t be left open until late in the evening as is common place in other stations?
* Thoroughly recommend Tamworth for a pub crawl though - The Tamworth Tap and The Old Bank House, no more than 10 minutes walk from the station are exceptional!
