Anther good day.
I must admit to having a soft spot for Sheffield's public transport system, I remember when the buses had a fare cap - 4 pence for adults and 2 pence for under 16s.
Very useful when visiting Tinsley in order to rope in the class 13s.

Fortunately under 16s & college students have a flat fare of 70p (soon increasing to 80p) in the cost respect, and with all these bus partnerships coming around with lower fares, there's got to be something there for the passenger.

Caught the bus home yesterday from the same stop, and they've finally updated the notice to show the correct routes - although it's already out of date and they haven't updated it to show the latest diversion

The next trip report will arrive here hopefully on Wednesday...Tuesday cannot come soon enough! :D

An early start but well worth it...kinda!

Starting with an 0430 alarm, shower, drink, etc, and off out at 0525. This was early - first tram early! Somehow it'd already managed to run late, but at 0540 115 showed up to take me to Halfway, the first move of the day.

At Halfway, it was time to be picked up and off to Retford! At Retford, it was for the 0740 service to London, my first major Hull Trains trip, onboard winner 180109, arriving into London bang on time at 0913, although sadly the travelcard purchased on the train would prove to be fruitless in every single barrier that was encountered!

As 0930 arrived, it was down to the tube station and onto winning pair 21515/21516 across to Liverpool Street, where arriving slightly earlier than planned it was up to winners 379014/379010 to take us forwards to Tottenham Hale.

A quick fester complete and then it was onto winner 317652 across to Stratford, to pick up a slightly late running winner 90013 down to Liverpool Street - quite a nice run down too in the MK3 coaching stock!

Back underground, and it was next the job of winners 21095/21096 forwards to Aldgate on the Metropolitan line, before winners 21376/21375 forwards to Tower Hill on the circle line. Out of the underground, and into Fenchurch Street left us with winner 357022 forwards to Limehouse, where triple winners 27/72/12 were forwards to Shadwell on the DLR. We'd accidentally got on a Tower Gateway DLR needing Bank, so it was to dud 54 with winners 29/05 across to Bank, before getting lost trying to find Cannon Street. Fortunately, we'd done it just in time to make winner 376023 over to Grove Park, where we picked up a very vocal winner 466026 to Bromley North and back.

Sadly, we'd just missed the Charing Cross service so it was back onto now dud 376023 forwards to Hither Green, where boredom led to double winners 465152/465163 back to Grove Park, for winners 456046/456013 back across to London Bridge. The station concourse actually looks pretty cool now, but we couldn't bask in it for long - double winners 375915/375925 took us the short hop over to Waterloo East, where the South West Trains hours or two began! Aiming for as many different types of unit as possible, it was first onto double winners 455742/455711 across to Vauxhall, where winner 458518 then took us forwards to Clapham Junction, where double winners 450002/450078 then led us back to Waterloo. Next it was winners 159001/159022 back across to Clapham (in which I noticed SWT don't acknowledge the existance of Exeter Central, yet they do to ExeterCentral!). From here, winner 450001 was the chariot back to Waterloo, for treble winners 455871/456004/456012 back to Clapham, before returning to Waterloo on winners 455710/455850, where 444001 was led back to Clapham

Finally off SWT, which was starting to feel slightly boring by this point, it was down to winners 377104/377435/377404 across to Victoria, which were surprisingly not cancelled! Back underground at Victoria, and it was winners 21409/21410 across to Blackfriars, where another pair of winners, 377517/377516 were taken a hop up the Thameslink core to, well, City Thameslink, for winners 319452/319437 up to Farringdon.

Reliably informed, here we waited for the 1651 to Brighton, which rocked up on time as my first 700, 700109, and wow, what impressive units these are! Other than the seats, obviously.

The tedious run through to East Croydon over, and now it was to a pair of very broken winners, 171804/171805 through to London Bridge, where it was down to winners 442405/442424 to deliver us safely back at East Croydon.

Sadly, the day was almost over by this point, but there was still about two hours left of bashing to go, so it was up to winners 387103/387129 back through onto the Thameslink core, for winning S Stock 21557/21558 through to Moorgate, where winners 313057/313045 were taken through to Moorgate, for a very vocal pair of winners 365532/365527 back to Kings Cross. With an hour and a half to go before the VTEC, a quick Finsbury Park leap was called for before my legs decided they'd had enough of running around London (I ended up pulling a muscle out of it which is still giving me enough grief now!).

The Finsbury Park leap was up to winners 321419/321406 there and winner 365508 back.

Back at Kings Cross, disaster struck as my eyes glimpsed onto the disruption boards making our way back through the concourse - the OHLE was down at Retford. B$%&*£^s!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fortunately our train was still running, but not calling at the ultimate destination of the journey, which was a pain to say the least. Even more a pain was that after winning every single unit all day today, it was down to double duds 43238/43208 providing the power and shove back north, to Newark, where a s^£*$y replacement coach took us further north to Retford, arriving 28 minutes delayed - aargh!

Not to worry though, it wasn't 0115 that I arrived home at all

Apart from the pulled muscle and faff with the wires at Retford it sounds like a great day was had!Even though both 238 and 208 were duds, 208 is the best VTEC power car and the second best one overall!

sounds like a fun and varied day in London.
You're not the only one, I had wires down on the GWML last February, and I said something much worse than that! ;) Long story short I had to get a really slow SWT 450 from Waterloo

Probably the same sort of reaction I had when I got gen that the Cross Country tram I'd booked on from New Street to York back in August wasn't a tram ;)

Sounded like a very varied day in London :)

Shame the delay to Retford wasn't over 30 minutes :(

----

BTW I will be floating around Sheffield tomorrow, with the aim of getting a few of the stops towards Meadowhall done, if you see a little frog on a bag say hi :)

Aside from the farce on the way home, what a beast of a day! Well done on getting so much in, and you're not the only one who quickly gets bored of SWT. I feel more at home on the Metro in Brussels than I do on SWT...

It's quite annoying - although in fairness the return journey was bought in the Nifty Fifty sale so I only paid £8.50

I'll be in Nottingham tomorrow sadly mate.

Less of a case of getting bored with SWT...more of a case of getting bored of the same scenery! So much to win between the two but shuttling backwards and forwards on the same hops isn't my kettle of fish.

Just remember that (most) services are pick up only at clapham junction on the mainline side (P9) ;)

Was aware...go up to the guard, "This your train", "This stop at Clapham", the two PU only services we did the guard has 0 problems with us being onboard

------

Not going to do a trip report for today, but did a few trams around Nottingham, and a couple of bus journeys.

In the time I've been off college I've accrued around 5280 miles - which I'm bloody impressed with to say the least!

Don't worry, I'm still here! (Sadly ;) )

Today's bash was what I've been waiting for since June - the Northern vouchers are back! So of course, with the best tram, 116 through to the station, it was time to purchase some tickets, get some drinks (Nice to see Superdrug are still providing misleading information about their meal deal  )

My plan for today was to clear the strands of the Northern network around Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire - but I'd arrived too early for the 0944 to Lincoln - oh well, dud 158908 it was to Meadowhall to pick it up from there.

Most annoyingly, whilst at Meadowhall, long term absentee tram 118 showed up - aaaaargh! I'd been trying to get this all week! Oh well I thought, let's stick to the plan - the heap for the next two hours turned up as dud 142064 - urgh - and it was off to Lincoln, scoring the track east of Worksop - and then obviously back to Worksop! By the end of this, I'd now accrued 109 miles on this 142 - the highest 142 and hopefully the highest any will get to!

At Worksop, the plus 20 was interrupted by the arrival of dud 142066 also going to Lincoln, so I took this through to Retford Low Level, where the 1247 Cleethorpes via Brigg was the next journey - formed of Miseryheap 142047 - with the track between Retford and Barnetby being new for me here.

Arriving into Cleethorpes slightly early, it was to the chippy for some dinner, and then going to clear the final required line in the area - Barton on Humber.
I'd been tipped off with the unit on here earlier, but I was still pleasantly surprised when winner 153328 rolled in - clearing the last line on my last Northern 153! The outbound and return trips of this was pretty pleasant - the jointed track making it even more so!

Back in Cleethorpes, here was my attempt at trying to be normal - it didn't really work, but I'd had a celebratory ice cream (at £2.20 - never again!), and had a wonder down the estuary following the railway line. I reached a foot crossing just outside the station and sat around for five minutes - there were some kids messing around on the crossing, throwing ballast and stones around, and I was half tempted to inform the BTP...when the police turned up. It seemed that the driver of the inbound TransPennine had reported trespassers at the crossing :lol:

Leaving to catch the return working whilst the kids were being shouted at, I felt that this was a day well done, even more so by knowing that my unit home would be an ex-W&B, Perkins engined, 158, in place of the usual glorified Leyland National.

The day got even better as I reached the station...to see dud 158790 sat in platform 3 - not ex-W&B...and not Perkins engined! I was in quite a good mood after this, even though the 153 that would be tagged along on the back would be mega dud 153378. I must admit, Cummins 158s sound absolutely amazing, full stop.

Arriving into Sheffield four minutes early, it was to the trams, where a delayed 102 would take me home through three sets of passenger disturbances.

Of course, it wouldn't be that simple - 118 had migrated its way onto the evening Herdings workings - b*****!!!!!!!

Good to have you back by all means, and I can't help but agree with your comment on the 158s; the Perkins ones just don't sound as good in my view.

Congratulations on getting your last Northern 153 in the book!

Chingy ice cream is tradition at the seaside, but for the North £2.20 is a bit much. Even in Paignton it was £2.30 (or thereabouts) and that's in a tourist hotspot. No offence intended but Cleethorpes is hardly known for being a tourist hotspot

Hi all,

Just a quick update, since I'm out of data and so can't post any updates to Twitter [emoji15]

Today is a GM Rail Ranger where my aim was to blitz trams and units. So far...it's not gone too well, although there is some good news to come out of it...all to come for later.

Although repetitive, the plan for the next few Saturdays is for some more Northern rangers, and although I'm not sure when the validity of them end, the 19th will sadly be a day working to make the place better at maybe my favourite place - I'm sure those who follow me on Twitter will know exactly where I'm on about!!

Anyway...I best go and get a replacement bus back to Piccadilly now unless anything better turns up...[emoji23]

Hi TC60054. I've done a few Northern dayrangers this year including Morecambe to Nottingham twice. It's an excellent ticket for £10.

Ahhh here we go...

29/10/16 - Greater Manchester

A few weeks ago, Tech gave me the idea of continuing with the "Pacer Chase". I thought this was a good idea, however the thought of spending a day chasing Pacers gave me the chills when I woke up this morning, so debating what to do I leapt on tram 108 to the station, to make the 0911 to Manchester. I'd never seen such poor railhead conditions up my way on Supertram before now, but credit where credit is due - the driver handled it all very well - probably all this "Shalesmoor training"

At Sheffield, I had the shock of my life when I saw 185106 sat waiting patiently in platform 6A awaiting the arrival of the Cleethorpes unit...but non the less, this led to 185106/185146 being my chariots across the Hope Valley. Sat in 146, I thought that the front three had been locked out, but it turns out that the front three and the rear three were all F&S

I bailed at Stockport, and purchased the ticket. I decided tram & train was the idea for today...boy was that a bad idea. I'd have gone to Manchester and purchased a ticket to blimmin' Liverpool if I'd have known what awaited me at Manchester!! Dud 323231 took me fowards to Manchester on the 1006.

At Manchester, I was reliably informed my last 158 was working on the Manchester Calder Valleys today...so I went to catch a tram, and was greeted by a man in yellow directing people to replacement buses. Dammit. So I now make my way over to platform 14 to catch a train to Salford to connect back to Victoria...no trains. Blast!!

This led to a walk back through the station, where I spotted the 1046 to Stoke, formed of winner 323227, so of course I took this on the fast run back through to Stockport, where winner 175005 was picked up on the way back to Manchester. The auto announcer at Stockport was getting very confused at the random VSTP path in for the ATW!

Another winner caught my eye at Manchester, so winner 323238 was taken through to Godley, where a ten minute dwell resulted in dud 323233 back to Manchester. Now I'd have to bite the bullet, I was running on thin ground winning units out of Piccadilly all day, so it was down to Metrolink and onto a replacement bus across to Victoria - at least it had WiFi though. This was a welcome surprise considering I accidentally used all my data at college whilst watching a video after their Wifi cut out

I'd timed the trip to Victoria well - my most elusive 142 was waiting on a Southport, but what caught my eye first was the unit arriving for the 1248 Leeds semi-fast. To Rochdale it was, on winner 158753 - Northern 158s all cleared!! Fortunately, at Rochdale the 1300 return was running late, so this was taken back to Victoria, being formed of winner 150268 and dud 150148.

Dinnertime, update this thread, check what was waiting to leave, and it was onto the replacement bus back to Piccadilly. Here, duds 142036/142061 were taken over to Stockport, where after a 15 minute dwell, winner 323229 took me back to Manchester - one to go! I'd had gen on my elusive 142, and I didn't want to miss it as this was the first time I'd even seen it! Making a mental note that 323236 was out and on the Crewe via Stockport, it was back to Metrolink, where double winners 3005/3039 took me to Etihad Campus, for dud and winner 3095/3091 to Cemetery Road. From here, it was stalker 3069 to Piccadilly, replacement bus again to Victoria and then onto the 1623 Blackpool, as far as Salford. This was a nice little gem formed of dud and winner 142047/142028 - four Northern Pacers to go!

At Salford, it was onto dud 150119 back to Victoria, where I really couldn't be bothered with yet another bus, so winner and dud 156441/150228 were taken through to Stalybridge on the Huddersfield, where I made a surprisingly nice connection onto 185144 - not had this one in a while!

Back at Piccadilly, I decided to watch the goings on with 323s...sure enough, straight away the 1746 Crewe via Airport rolled up, and winner 323236 took me through to the Airport, to completely clear my Northern 323s, finally! After months of no luck, I'd had my last four in just one day

A quick relief stop, and not wanting to see the delights of Manchester Piccadilly twice more, I made an ingenious plan to win the "Airport shuttle" without needing to go back to Piccadilly. Winner tram 3100 took me 35 minutes up the line to St Werburghs Road, where a connection onto another winner, 3102 took me to East Didsbury.

I had ten minutes here, so I made the walk down the road to the railway station, cautiously trying not to get run over. Sure enough, winner 319382 thumped in on the 1926 Airport, complete with plenty of wheelflats - like half of Supertram's fleet then!

At Manchester Airport, my train home was hard to miss. Well, you can't really miss a bright pink 185 can you?! "Gay train" 185104 took me back across the 'Valley, where tram 119 (also with plenty of flats), took me the four miles back home.

£14.55 for 15 winners and three buses, I'd say that's a day well spent even though I was less than pessimistic about how the day would turn out at half 10!

Apart from the trams and lack of trains from Salford it sounds like a brilliant day was had, and a cheap one too!

Considering how grim things seemed early on, it turned out surprisingly well! Well done on clearing your Northern 158s and their 323s, and only needing 4 Northern 142s must be nice. I need 23 of them, plus some 144s!
