considering one is at Ilford now (albeit for coupler mods but), and they are being taken permanently, yes theyll get a new livery and interior.

doing this keeps the 196s off the SHL and the 172s don't play well with the 168s, and are route restricted on CH.

This seems like a sensible move - is there some view that demand will recover on West Midlands Railway quicker than it will on Chiltern such that a full service needs to be run on the Snow Hill Lines?

It may be more to do with the late delivery of the 196s to West Mids and the need to release 170s to EMR, which are needed to replace the last (non-PRM) 153s and allow 156s to go to Northern.

its a mix of both reasons tbh. I wonder how chiltern will cope with -6 trains (2 for hydride, 4 172s), after all the franchise ends dec 21 so we will see

Only on loan until the 196’s are in service according to what we’ve been told & from info seen from Chiltern. Whether that’s changed in the last week. As it stands only Worcester depot being trained on the /1’s & they will be being used exclusively on the Hereford services, nothing to do with the Snow Hill lines.

101 and 103 are now at Ilford, over 3 hours behind schedule - 102 and 104 are pathed to move back to Tyseley tomorrow night.

172102 and 104 moving Wembley to Ilford today for coupler modifications. First unit at Tyesley by/on April 30th.
Why did any 196s need coupler modifications...? Assuming internal coupler housing width, hadn't the fix for that already been found during the 195 build...? Surely yaw damper modifications are what are needed.

I dont think any 196s have had any coupling modifications. Its the Chiltern 172s 5hat appear to be having them

Chiltern 172's x 4 coming to WMR need coupler mod as electrical pins are different due to Network Southeast mod to stop other BR business sector from borrowing units.

Chiltern 172's are cover for 170's transferring to East Midlands Raiway due to the 196's being delayed. Hence why the mention is in this thread.

Chiltern 172's will go back to Angel in December once finished with WMT and they will then be off-lease with Chiltern. That may well become a subject to a new thread, what happens to a 4 train microfleet.

Why don’t they just stay with WMR? They get all the 172s to aid with capacity and reduce the 196s working Snow Hill routes, and Chiltern get rid of a microfleet. Everyone wins (albeit Chiltern will need replacement stock)

A Chiltern maintenance engineer has said all the ATP has been ripped out of the 4 x 172/1's to keep Chilterns ATP equipped trains running.

Sounds like they will not return to Chiltern once off lease in December.

That’s understandable, perhaps when they are off leased there will be a slightly clearer picture.

An irritating microfleet perhaps, but I'm baffled how Chiltern can permanently do without the 172s, when the stock they would like - more Turbostars of the 168/170 variety - is like gold dust
