A friend is trying to visit Belarus, possibly this September, a few questions: is the border open at Terespol/Brest, and are there passenger trains crossing the border? If there are no trains is it possible to walk?

According to the internet the visa free scheme for the Western provinces (Brest & Grodno) of Belarus still seems to apply but no public transport options appear to exist.

I've found a bus from Druskininkai (LT) to Grodno but nothing from Poland.

Any information on the region would be much appreciated.

The border is open and there is a bus from outside the station. Currently no passenger services on the 2 miles or so across the border as far as I know.

Aiui no through trains for quite some time.
A bus service runs.

Queues at the border can be exceptionally long waits, whilst 2-3 hours could be normal in days gone by, theres Polish truck driver protests, Belarussian Mid-East refugee issues still on going thats before the politics.

Locals on motorbikes of course have their ways.

Believe BCh are under EU sanctions now. Also, the country is on the FCDO "advise against all travel" list, so most travel insurance isn't valid.

All trains now terminate in Terespol.

As the poster above mentioned, Belarus is on the Do Not Travel list. The Gov.uk site for Belarus also states that Visa-free visits to the Brest and Grodno regions must be through a registered tour operator and you can only travel through specific border checkpoints.

Pre-covid and pre-war I´ve done, to visit the for me last not yet been into country in EUR, that visa-free 1 night stay in Grodno, in the far no-we of BY. By train from Bialystok and by minibus back into. YOu cannot just walk to border and claim that-at least a 1 night stay must be booked in an approved hotel on the list and something else has to be booked. It all worked smoothly then and I was welcomed. I have no idea if and how this still applies for tomorrow.
All pax-trains PL-BY have been suspended but some (mini)bus may still run. Try the usual PL sites like e-podroznik.pl if it has info, or google departures from the busstation in Terespol. But it may even be some ´in´formal minibus gathering pax in front of the station or so.
