I had virtually no trouble with my teeth up until about a year ago and also the same dentist for a long period of time. However, since then I've had two fillings and one extraction due to an infection.

My (NHS) dentist doesn't exactly have the soft touch, he just goes for it. He also seems to be totally against any sort of root canal work, he was very keen to take out my molar after the infection cleared up.

I can't say going to the dentist is especially pleasant for me. I've certainly began to take oral hygiene a lot more seriously that I used to, in order to avoid it.

About a year ago, I suffered every few days at least from sharp nerve pain for 15 seconds in one of my molar teeth where enamel had worn down. Its was the sort of pain that would make you jump from your seat while eating. I started using sensitive toothpastes designed to protect enamel (Colgate Sensitive, Sensodyne or the foreign brand Elmex) and I can honestly they have solved the issue. It's not very often I would endorse any sort of product like that, but honestly they made such a huge difference.

I've had four teeth extracted, numerous cleans and a brace. Got the brace off about two years ago, which was a relief. It really makes a difference - your teeth look amazing afterwards, but it can also be rather painful! Having teeth extracted, along with the various tightening and closings of the fixed brace every few months, can end up leaving you on a severe diet on painkillers!

We've been going to a private dentist for the past few years as the NHS one wasn't very good. He'd book you in for a clean, then he'd clean half your teeth and send you home. You'd have to come back a week later to get the job finished, mostly likely because they were pressed for time. The Private Dentist, on the other hand, is very reliable and efficient, and well worth the extra money.
