This tour is now confirmed to be Mk1 stock featuring D9009 Alycidon which should be fantastic thundering down the ECML to London Kings Cross and then back to Cleethorpes, then featuring a WCRC 47/57 to assist with a reversal. The tour looks to be going ahead despite strike action that day.

SATURDAY 29 JULY 2023

JOIN US AS WE WELCOME THE RETURN OF A DELTIC
TO THE MAINLINE WITH PATHFINDER RAILTOURS!

For two decades the 3300hp 100mph Deltic diesel locos were the mainstay of the fastest and heaviest trains on the route from London Kings Cross to York, Newcastle and Edinburgh, also running to Leeds, Hull and Cleethorpes. This train will take us on some of those routes, where these locos were an everyday sight for twenty years, as well as a few other sections that were used when engineering work required diversions from the regular routes, and indeed to other lines where the appearance of a Deltic would have turned heads!
BR Class 55 No. 55009 (D9009) Alycidon heads this excursion from the start, via Derby and Sheffield to Doncaster (first call), then a circular trip around Pontefract, Gascoigne Wood and Selby back to Doncaster before the main line run to Peterborough. From there we take a ‘diversionary’ route, by way of Ely and Cambridge to Hitchin, and a run thence to ‘The Cross’, as London’s Kings Cross station is known to railway staff and enthusiasts alike (Kings Cross 1245-1515).
After this short break in London we return north on the main line, as far as Newark, there turning to the east, through Lincoln to Barnetby and to Cleethorpes. After a short leg stretch, an assistant engine will haul the train to Ulceby for a reversal, where D9009 will resume command for the return journey through Doncaster and Sheffield to Derby and Willington to conclude our day of enjoyment and nostalgia.
Named at Doncaster Works on 21 July 1961 before introduction to traffic, D9009 maintained the ‘racehorse’ tradition of the LNER by commemorating the winner of the 1949 Ascot Gold Cup. Alycidon was one of eight ‘racehorse’ Deltics stabled at London’s Finsbury Park depot until its closure in May 1981, when it moved to York. 55009 was one of four Deltics prepared to work a series of farewell railtours during their final six months of operation, its final outing in BR service being on 2 January 1982 as standby locomotive for the ‘Deltic Scotsman Farewell’.
Today, ‘Alycidon’ is owned and cared for by the Deltic Preservation Society, to whom we are grateful for their agreement to use this precious locomotive.

Curious… how is D9009 leading into and out of KGX?
RTT shows the ECS pulled out to Ferme Park for approx one hour - so can we expect a change of ends during that time?

Must be a run around then, probably a double one too, can’t see a triangle junction in the area. The 47/57 will need to be on the rear after that to lead the reversal out of Cleethorpes to the triangle junction at Ulceby.

Yes, still going ahead, I received my tickets earlier in the week. Going to be odd running on an empty railway due to industrial action.

One path still to be entered into the system still I believe

Been mentioned on wnxx that the West Coast 57/0s can now do 95mph as mechanically they are the same as a 57/3.

Thanks, the one missing path is the one that I was searching for.

Any recommendations for spotting it on the circular Doncaster to Doncaster leg in the morning? Preferably somewhere with an easy place to park.

From Pathfinder's Facebook page:

"Our Capital Deltic Reprise excursion is ready to go. We apologise for the slight delay, unfortunately our train operator sent us the incorrect carriage formation last night, which meant a large shunt had to take place at Burton-on-Trent this morning. We’re on the move now, though"

Thank you! It’s not on the screens at Sheffield and the staff didn’t seem to know of the delay.

Running fast to London from Doncaster now, not running via Cambridge in order to make up time. Losing the only bit of winning route coverage I was going to get now Cambridge-Hitchin. Although a fast run on the full ECML Doncaster-London behind a Deltic is still a treat.

Edit: Apologies, that information has now been contradicted on the tannoy and we are informed the tour will now continue booked route via Ely and Cambridge.

Noticed it losing a bit of time here and there. Combined with the evidence of a possible oil leak is it on one engine?

It was rattling along quite happily on the ECML at 95mph Northbound. Although I have seen a video with the 47 pushing going South earlier.

When I saw the Deltic start up at Kings Cross it did look to be two plumes of smoke.

A lot of time has been lost with random stops for no apparent reason (e.g before and after Barnetby), and there’s been lots of inefficiency in getting going again after stops (Cleethorpes, where passengers weren’t even allowed off, we lost more time). The delays have been an irritation, on a day where there’s been little traffic to get in the way.

In terms of losing a minute here and there, I’m wondering if it was timed incorrectly? Or the additional coach added this morning has had an impact? I’m going to double check both engines are operating when I get off at Sheffield though.

Edit: Just seen its timed on RTT for a trailing load of 455 tonnes, which seems very optimistic and may explain the time loss.

Been following all the legs on RTT and the dwell times seem to be the main culprit, hopelessly optimistic for a tour like this.

Does anyone know where D9009 is off to next and when please?
The next two tours for D9009 are:

UK Railtours trip from Kings Cross to York and Scarborough on Saturday 19 August
https://www.ukrailtours.com/product/the-coronation-deltic/
THE CORONATION DELTIC
Saturday 19 August 2023

This tour is now Fully Booked. Contact the office to be added to the waiting list.

Sadly now somewhat removed from the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III due to being rescheduled, and in association with the Deltic Preservation Society and West Coast Railways, UK Railtours are proud to present the return to main line charter operation of Deltic 55009 Alycidon. Following a lengthy period of repair and refurbishment, Alycidon roars back on to the main line in 2023, and is sure to put on a spectacular show!

Pathfinder / Railway Magazine trip from Kings Cross to Newcastle on Wednesday 27 September
https://www.pathfindertours.co.uk/events/the-tees-tyne-commemorative/

WEDNESDAY 27 SEPTEMBER 2023
CELEBRATE THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE TEES-TYNE PULLMAN
ABOARD A CHARITY TRAIN IN CONJUNCTION WITH ‘THE RAILWAY MAGAZINE’
Back in the autumn of 1948 British Railways launched the Tees-Tyne Pullman, running between Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Darlington and London King’s Cross, aimed at businessmen.

Initially operated by former LNER Pacific steam locomotives hauling Pullman carriages, by the early-1970s, BR introduced MK2 rolling stock on the service which was often hauled by a 3300hp ‘Deltic’ locomotive. But by 1976 the service had been withdrawn as new InterCity 125 trains (HSTs) began to take over East Coast Main Line services.

To mark the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the introduction of the service, The Railway Magazine has joined forces with Pathfinder Railtours to run a recreation of the 1970s service, raising money for Martin House Children’s Hospice and Prostate Cancer UK with a train which will use blue and grey MK2 Intercity carriages similar to those used 50 years ago, and hauled by ‘Deltic’ No. 55009 ‘Alycidon’.

The ‘Tees-Tyne Commemorative’ will consist of a mix of Standard, First Class and Premier Dining seating priced to suit all budgets. A percentage of the ticket price will be shared with both charities.

It is anticipated D9009 will provide some high speed running in the 90-100mph range, and to ensure you have a souvenir of the memorable day, a photo stop is planned. There will be an off train afternoon break taken in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, with its many attractions.

In the meantime, presumably it goes back to Barrow Hill.

The Network Rail controller guy on the platform at Kings Cross was saying more people turned out yesterday to see the Deltic than they did for the Flying Scotsman :D

Yes, left Sheffield on one engine apparently the other packed up at Barnetby

Arrival at Kings Cross, the Deltic had an obvious oil leak on the body side, it was hard to decide if the oil had carried over from the exhaust port in the roof or had blown out of a side grill.
Arriving back at Kings Cross after the Ferme Park layover, the oil had been cleaned off. Departure from Kings Cross was on two engines, a friend on the trip believes the engine problem arose in the locality of Stevenage and an engine was shut down after leaving the ECML at Newark but later in the run restarted. Ulceby departure was on two engines, as was the Doncaster departure, through the run to Newark to Cleethorpes he believes the engine was shut down as a precaution or for the on-board fitters to make checks.
455 tons (the 47) or load 15 is a lot even for a Deltic.

Southbound near Cambridge then northbound at Hitchin:

Looking at the the Northbound Hitchin section, hard to be certain, but possibly only one plume of exhaust smoke visible indicating only one engine active.
