I have been speaking to my mum and she and some of her friends are intent on going to London to attend. Putting aside how sensible that is at their age ( and don't dare ask what that age is!) they EXPECT to get a train home at whatever hour. They expect the railway to deliver at extraordinary times.
Subliminal advertising - all in the name - Rail Delivery Group ;)
Joking aside hope they have an okay journey at whatever time they happen to be travelling.

I'm sure I'm not the only one to have thought this, but it's mildly fitting that the planned queue route more or less follows the Jubilee line (Bermondsey-Westminster).

I am very pleased to see the last train from Waterloo to Haslemere on Friday morning is 1:15 am. Saturday morning is at 1:15 am. On Sunday morning it's 1:20 am but the arrival time into Guildford is the same as Friday, although it gets into Haslemere a minute earlier. On Monday morning it's 1:10 am with an earlier arrival time.

If the laying in-state queue was 5 hours say at 7:30 pm, on any of those days, I would join it. If it were 6 hours, I wouldn't.

The times are
Thursday
Waterloo 1:15 - Haslemere 2:05
Friday
Waterloo 1:15 - Haslemere 2:10
Saturday
Waterloo 1:20 - Haslemere 2:09
Sunday
Waterloo 1:10 - Haslemere 1;57

To what extent is the claim of 30 hour queues designed to dampen down demand? If the queues do not materialise, then some people who were in two minds whether or not to go will decide to go, so I expect there will always be people queuing - it would be a bit embarassing if there was no one waiting in the queue!

Not sure if I am going too far off-topic by including the day of the funeral itself in this thread (apologies if I am) but GWR have added a few additional workings for Monday 19th September:

To London:
- 1A35 (2310 (Sunday) Bristol Temple Meads - London Paddington, arr. 0114) (arrives BTM as 5A35 from Stoke Gifford)
- 1A36 (0024 Bristol Temple Meads - London Paddington, arr. 0203) (arrives BTM as 5A36 from Stoke Gifford)
- 1A37 (0130 Bristol Temple Meads - London Paddington, arr. 0310) (arrives BTM as 5A37 from Stoke Gifford)
- 1A03 (0229 Bristol Temple Meads - London Paddington, arr. 0401) (arrives BTM as 5A03 from Stoke Gifford)
- 1A05 (0321 Bristol Temple Meads - London Paddington, arr. 0457) (arrives BTM as 1Z05 0134 London Paddington - Bristol TM, arr. 0300)
- 1Z68 (0400 Plymouth - London Paddington, arr. 0716)
- 1Z69 (0300 Penzance - London Paddington, arr. 0811)
- 1L02 (0428 Swansea - London Paddington, arr. 0730)
- 1P07 (0420 Oxford - London Paddington, arr. 0506)

From London:
- 1Z98 (2212 London Paddington - Plymouth, arr. 0130)
- 1C99 (2340 London Paddington - Plymouth, arr. 0257)
- 1C40 (0029 London Paddington - Bristol Temple Meads, arr. 0158) (returns as 5Z44 0229 to London Paddington)
- 1C41 (0134 London Paddington - Bristol Temple Meads, arr. 0300) (to depot as 5C41 0322 to Stoke Gifford)
- 1C42 (0230 London Paddington - Bristol Temple Meads, arr. 0401) (returns as 1K71 0510 to London Paddington)
- 1D09 (0230 London Paddington - Oxford, arr. 0320) (Monday only: returns as 1P07 to London Paddington)

And one from Chiltern Railways too for Tuesday 20th September:
- 1T99 (0315 London Marylebone - Oxford, arr. 0438)

From Avanti West Coast there are multiple extra services - too many to list here - to & from Manchester Piccadilly, Birmingham New Street and London Euston including:
To London:
- 1R02 (0500 Wolverhampton - London Euston, arr. 0703)
- 1R03 (0524 Wolverhampton - London Euston, arr. 0716)
- 1R05 (0604 Wolverhampton - London Euston, arr. 0754)
- 1R20 (0639 Shrewsbury - London Euston, arr. 0913) (arrives Shrewsbury as 5J20 from Barton-under-Needwood)
- 1Z20 (0724 Wolverhampton - London Euston, arr. 0913)

From London:
- 9J37 (1823 London Euston - Shrewsbury, arr. 2055)
- 9G47 (2230 London Euston - Wolverhampton, arr. 0114)
- 1H76 (2200 London Euston - Manchester Piccadilly, arr. 0059)
- 9G48 (2330 London Euston - Wolverhampton, arr. 0217)

A good haul: I wonder how many will use the very late ones though but perhaps they are expecting large queues at both ends.

Dave

EMR have extra paths on Monday night/Tuesday morning running hourly from London at 0115 to 0415. These are showing as 'runs as required'.

If anyone is thinking of going, the queue for the laying in state is currently closed.

The BBC say the queue is about 5 miles long.

Yet further down they say it is 6.9 miles to Southwark and in Southwark park, it is 3 miles zig zag.

Now, some if not all of these figures come from the DCMS.

Earlier it was said the queue was 4.9 miles long and the nearest landmark was Southwark Park. Southwark Park is 2 miles away if it's 6.9 miles from Westminster Hall. Unless they are referencing a different point in Southwark. However, the total distance is 10 miles.

Here is a screenshot of the news page earlier, where it references 4.9 miles and 6.9 miles respectively.

I think someone or some people need to be educated on distance landmarks.

If anyone else can explain a good reason for these differences please do.

There is a significant amount of the queue just before it reaches the end that is a maze queue.

The final 3 miles are indeed in Southwark Park, in vaguely 1 mile long zones of "Disney queues" (i.e. zigzagging) - these are "switched out" when not necessary. Zone 3 was only used until just after lunch.

When the decision to close the queue came earlier, all three of those zones were full. For whatever reason, after the closure announcement came, entries still continued for quite a while. In the meantime, issues further up the queue (one of which was the route takes the queue across Jamaica Road which hadn't been closed) eased; by the time the queue was actually paused the issues had largely died down. Certainly people were still entering the queue throughout the afternoon despite the announcement. At the height, it was taking people almost 2 hours to get to the back of the last "zone"; by the afternoon they'd been queuing (mostly walking) for less than 30 minutes.

For reference, DCMS have announced queuing has resumed - with a wait time of over 24 hours. Based on what I know, that's a bit over the top, but we'll see.

There are various rushes during the day - one of which is definitely 10-11:30; I'm presuming - although don't know - that these are people coming down on the first off-peak services of the day.

Tomorrow is an interesting one. Conventional wisdom would suggest absolute carnage, but I'm not entirely convinced by that. Again, we'll see.

Some of the mourners queuing had an extra bonus, queuing with and chatting to David Beckham:

Speaking from the queue to see the Queen lying in state, David Beckham said he appreciated the time he had shared with members of the public there.

The former professional footballer, who had been queuing for twelve hours, said he wanted to "celebrate the amazing life of our Queen".

That was my theory in Edinburgh as well. Queue was shorter than I expected, but I went on a peak train that got into Waverley just after peak time ended, so before off-peak trains were arriving. Seeing the queue in London, its a miracle that the overnight queue in Edinburgh got down to 90 minutes (according to the early Breakfast news that day), and 2 hours when I got there.

Given how busy these series presumably will be, what's the likelihood of the 03:15 London Marylebone to Oxford being formed of say a 9-car 165 because of the capacity?

At 03:15 on Tuesday morning? Nil chance as it runs into the bays at Oxford.

Unusually, an empty train is being used as a temporary waiting room overnight. Possibly the only time its been used like that?

Finally, it's the 701's time to shine! They have been parked all over various depots, rehearsing this for ages.

(Disclaimer: this is a joke, I have no idea if 701s are used)

Here are some news articles about this:
XC: https://www.railadvent.co.uk/2022/0...m-for-those-paying-respects-to-the-queen.html
SWR: https://www.mylondon.news/news/zone-1-news/queens-funeral-london-rail-companies-25023749

I read about this in the Evening Standard's Friday edition as well. I remember it said that the locations of these trains are not disclosed on purpose. I guess to avoid too many people congregating.
