I've got a meeting late morning tomorrow near Farringdon station and I'm looking at the easiest way to get there and back. I was thinking of getting one of the Thameslink trains that stops at Farringdon (after changing at Three Bridges). My questions are, will a Horsham to London travelcard allow me to go beyond London Bridge to Farringdon, and if I leave Horsham at 9:20 and return around 13:30, can I get an off peak travelcard?

An off-peak one-day travelcard from Horsham is valid to any destination in zone 1-6, train, bus or underground. The restriction from Horsham is that trains do not arrive at their first London Terminal until 0945 so the 0925 departure to Peterborough is fine

A day return from Horsham to London Terminals isn't valid beyond City Thameslink. To travel to Farringdon or St Pancras an off-peak day return to 'London Thameslink' would need to be used, but strangely the travelcard (routed 'Not Gatwick Express') is cheaper.

Incidentally, there is no need to change if you leave on the 0855 or 0925 from Horsham. The off peak Travelcard is valid on either.
Thanks for the info, that makes the journey even easier.

If not using any of the Underground or Buses are just going Horsham to Farringdon & back.

Splitting at Three Bridges makes a return to Farringdon just £18.70

Horsham to Three Bridges
Off-Peak Day Return (CDR)
£5.50
Three Bridges to London Thameslink
Off-Peak Day Return (CDR)
£13.20
  • Not valid for travel on London Underground services.
  • Restriction C0 applies - click for details

Not valid for the 0855 though.

Not valid for the 0855 though.

OP specifed around 0920, so gave the best option for the 0925. If the OP wishes to catch the 0855 then the following split is £21.00

PriceDescription
Horsham to Horley
Off-Peak Day Return (CDR)
£7.70
Horley to London Thameslink
Off-Peak Day Return (CDR)
£13.30
  • Not valid for travel on London Underground services.
  • Restriction C0 applies - click for details

If the OP wished to use the 0855 with a Travelcard option then the £27.60 ticket is the cheapest, but a saving of £1.20 can be made on the 0925 by splitting at Gatwick Airport with the total cost £26.40.

Horsham to Gatwick Airport
Off-Peak Day Return (CDR)
£7.70
Gatwick Airport to London Zones 1-6
Off-Peak Day Travelcard (ODT)
£18.70
  • Not valid for travel on Gatwick Express services.
  • Restriction C0 applies - click for details

My plan was to get the 9:21 to Three Bridges and change to a fast Thameslink service to Farringdon. There is a direct service from Horsham at 9:25 but it stops almost everywhere, and doesn't get to Farringdon until 10:40. My meeting is at 11:00, so although I only have a five minute walk (max) at the end, the padding for delays is too tight for my liking.

Non travelcard option for the 0921 is the split at Three Bridges for £18.70

Travelcard option for the 0921 is the same price as splitting at Horley £26.40 :

Horsham to Gatwick Airport
Off-Peak Day Return (CDR)
£7.70
Gatwick Airport to London Zones 1-6
Off-Peak Day Travelcard (ODT)
£18.70
  • Not valid for travel on Gatwick Express services.

Walk from City Thameslink?
I agree.

Farringdon and City Thameslink are very close indeed. I wouldn’t pay any extra to travel from the south to Farringdon. A ticket to London Terminals is valid to City Thameslink.

Ok thanks, that will do for me. So if I ask for an off peak day return to any of the London terminals, I will be good for arriving/departing at City Thameslink.

The prices I quoted with splitting is the same price if you purchase to London Terminals.

So your not spending any extra at all.

I'd recommend splitting like shown above are you are saving money! Just ask for the tickets at the ticket office.

That's right. If you do opt to alight at City Thameslink travel at the front of the train goig towards London for a speedy exit at the Holborn Viaduct end of the station which is nearest to Farringdon. Don't exit via the Ludgate Circus exit as it's a longer walk!
