TPE's December timtables are live on RTT this morning.

I've spotted that 1B96 2118 Liverpool Lime Street to Doncaster is stopping at Dore & Totley at 23.07 until 23.11 for pathing reasons only. Not apparently to let down passengers

The previous 5 hourly trains stop in the public timetable There'll be one or two frustrated travellers from South-west Sheffield if they're not allowed to get offf there!

I wonder how many other little anomalies are hiding in the details?

Maybe been input wrong as a public stop?

Has activity code A at Dore & Totley: Stops or shunts for other trains to pass.

No passenger activity code, so will not appear in train enquiries.

Exactly. It's timed to sit there for 3 minutes with doors closed and any passengers for Dore & Totley would have to change at Sheffield and get back there half an hour later.

However , last night it ran through D&T 8 minutes earlyv but was hekd outside Sheffield for an on time arrival. Anyone wanting to reach south-west Sheffield or north-east Derbyshire could have been home half an hourc earlier if it had stopped the same as the previous TPE services

There must be other historic anomalies hidden in the timetables across the network.

Another anomaly is the service to Fishguard Harbour, where some trains skip many stations, reminiscent of the old boat train days. These days they are mere 2 car DMUs mostly, and usually with few passengers. The trains would be far more useful if they served more stations.

In most cases they duplicate other services, though I could see merit in the morning boat train leaving Swansea earlier and running via Carmarthen.

GW services on the Portsmouth to Bristol route dont serve Cosham after the 19:40 call in either direction meaning a change is needed, usually at Fareham. This skipping of the stop doesnt seem to speed up the service so what purpose does it serve ?

IIRC the Cosham stop was withdrawn because of fairly long term antisocial behaviour by locals. There was a post back in 2017 which mentioned that as the reason. It’s not the only place in the country this has happened.

Why would any antisocial behaviour affect GW specifically, and not SN or SW?

Good question, was never answered at the time.

GWR services originally called at Cosham for the onward connections to Havant/Chichester/Brighton. Aside from recent timetable changes effectively rendering this redundant anyway, it’s far preferable for late evening interchanges to be made at Fratton rather than encouraging pax to hang around at a location with a dubious reputation. IIRC there have been problems with road replacement services at Cosham as well in the past.

In terms of connections its as easy to change at Fareham to be honest or even Southampton as the southern and GW services obviously follow each other between Cosham and Southampton and are quite close together. Easterly direction is very easy as the Southern connection SHOULD be already waiting at Southampton so no need to hang around on the platform.

The Windermere through services from Manchester are looped outside Oxenholme to let the TPE pass, presumably for passengers on those trains to connect to Windermere (it branches off so no need to for a faster train to pass here).

Also some services do not even call at Burnside or Staveley. https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:P55521/2023-09-16#allox_id=0
ThThe

There's one Manchester–Windermere train that pauses at signal CE45 until 13:30 because there's a train on the branch already, the 13:07 ex Oxenholme, which departs at 13:28.
