Since when has this been the case and how does that work out of interest?
They are now both under Directly Operated Railways (the DfTs operator of last resort) so all the money ends up going to the Treasury at the end of the day whether it comes via Northern or TPE. This has been the case since TPE was renationalised in May 2023 (Northern having be renationalised in March 2020). Arguably it has been the case since Covid but it's even more explicit now.

No different to when GWR gets asked to call the Reading - Gatwick trains additionally at the likes of Wanborough or Winnersh if SWR has fallen over. Or on a Sunday SWR is requested to call the Salisbury - Reading trains at the stations between Basingstoke & Reading if GWR are having a bad day.

Agreed also with the 'TOC only' restrictions being a bit pointless when at the end of the day all the money is going to the DfT.

In the past when Stalybridge was closed for electrification works TPE quite often ran between Liverpool and Manchester Airport using 185s and 802s.
These didn’t replace any other operators service, but formed from combining the two Liverpool-Victoria and Victoria - Airport services together with the usual stops of Lea Green and Newton Le Willows, as well as Piccadilly and Oxford Rd

Just found this on RTT (2Z34 LDS-YRK departing 20/04). Bit confused as this would normally be run by Northern. Anyone know why TPE are operating this service?
They're running every 2 hours all day, the fact it's a Z headcode means special workings, so most probably to do with the TRU works and stock locations.

It is as quoted several times in posts above.

Northern are using there stock to strengthen other services and TPE are then plugging there gaps by operating the York to Leeds stopper services.

For clarity these names are gone:

Directly Operated Railways
Operator of Last Resort

It is now:

DfT Operator Limited (DFTO)

Yes, and NT and TP are increasingly embedding team working, and many roles particularly with TPU work with both TOCs.
